I was not stationed there, but I have been there.

Not much was there in the late 70's

It is still the same now.

Was that bar "Stumps" around back then? Its probably one of the funnest things to do on libo, walk in there just relax and wait for a local to start ****, handle buisness and run like hell.

Apparently it was in Maxims top 100 list for most barfights

I was stationed at Schools Bn., MCCES 29 "stumps" from August '76 -early March '77.

It was hot as hell, but there was something spiritual about that desert. Received orders there out of boot camp. Going in on an open contract, like I did, I had no idea what my MOS was going to be. Luckily, I ended up being assigned as a 2811. I used to take walks out into the desert behind the BEQ with my boom box and some good music. Deep.

That EM club was a fight-a-night. Especially when the tankers came in from sitting in those "tin cans" all day long in the middle of the hot desert. Those guys had a permanent attitude! Either that, or their brains were fried from all that heat!

"78 to '80 7th Engineers or sumthin' like that. Motor T. across from the stables. Lived there 2000 to 2005....perfect dirt bike riding area. Stumps burned down I hear. Tankers were our parade deck coowners....many a drunken row with those guys...Myself, I stayed lit up the whole time I stationed there....lets just say I thank the Man upstairs everyday I'm kicking...

Loved 29 Palms! I was stationed there for three years. One in C&E Schools and two at the Det which is no longer there. However I wasn't there until 1986. I was a 2811.

Went to 2841 school-stationed there from 1/79 to 11/79, Spent at least a few weeks waiting to get picked up for school. First-Basic Electronic Course, then Radio Repairer. When we were in our last part of the course they canceled the course because the TSC-15 was being replaced by the radio that became the PRC-104(?). I was happy as a pig in poo because I was doomed to fail that week of course.

Funny thing happened while waiting to get picked up for electronic school. After morning formation they'd pick working parties to send out over the base. Then they'd send us back to the squad bays to wait for further orders. I figured out early they didn't know who was where so I'd go the the library not to far from Schools Battalion. I'd hang out till chow, get lunch, and go back and skate for the rest of the day. One day I nodded off and was woken with a shake of my leg. I looked up and saw two silver eagles. I hit my feet still sleeping. Battalion Commander-"What are you doing?" (I must have fallen asleep sir). 'What unit are you with?" (Schools, sir). He moves on to the next guy hanging around, and I escaped.

The next day they informed us the library was off limits. Whew.

Good time there. If you got acclimatized over time, it wasn't that bad. If you showed up in summer, like we used to with 1/5 during joint maneuvers with the Army at Fort Irwin, it sucked. What were those maneuvers called? Team Spirit? Gallant Eagle? I can't remember what was what...
