In 2007, the need was 500 bikes. This year the Salvation Army says more than 800 kids qualify for a two-wheeled gift and Toys for Tots is steeping up to the challenge.

Through Saturday, US Marines are putting together some of the more than 500 bikes bought with money raised by the Star City Corvette Club for this year’s holiday season. Local companies, including Berglund and Kroger donated the cash. The bike drive is being done in conjunction with “Toys for Tots”, the annual toy drive put on my the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

Star City Corvette Club spokesperson Ginny Kendrick says the Marines stress that kids between 10 and 14 are often times forgotten when people donate toys to the annual drive, so her club has decided to focus on that age group.

This is fifth year the club has teamed up with the Marines to create a “bicycle brigade”, finding good homes for hundreds of bikes across the Roanoke Valley. Donations for bikes are being accepted through December 6.
