The Toys"R"Us in Pensacola was invaded this morning by U.S. Marines on a mission.

Eight Marines were collecting new toys for needy children in the area. The toys were dropped off at Toys for Tots collection boxes at the toy store Bayou Boulevard and Ninth Avenue.

Second Lt. John Gonzalez volunteered to take part in the Toys for Tots program because he said every child should experience the joy of getting Christmas presents.

"I wanted to help families in need during this economic downfall," he said.

Last year, the local Toys for Tots program collected enough toys to provide Christmas presents for about 10,000 families in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Since October, local Marines have collected about 1,000 new toys for area families.

Marines will be stationed at the Pensacola Toys"R"Us until about 5 p.m. today, but toys can be dropped off anytime.

All Toys for Tots donation boxes will be picked up Dec. 10, and the toys will be distributed Dec. 16 and 17.
