Well, my name is Chris. I have thought of EARNING the title of a United States Marine since my two older brothers went into the Corps in 1994 & 1995. With a mother that is fully against it, I decided to try the Navy, were I was disqualed, than the recruiter jerking me around. After a few conversations with my brothers, and a GOOD friend that shipped last Monday to MCRDPI, and a persistant Marine Corps Recruiter that has turned into a good friend, I signed all of my papers over to the Marines on 2008Nov03, the same day my buddy was on his way to Parris Island. On my initial weigh in, I found out that I have to be at 190, I was at 199 that night, and was giving a week and a half to drop the weight. Today, I stand at 189. I am going to the recruiter in the afternoon, so he can finish processing my papers, get my med docs ready to send back up to MEPs. I have been told the earliest I can ship will be in Feb. and I will have to be at 178. I plan on reaching the goal early. I did a PFT with my recruiter, to see were I stood to give him an idea were I need to be at, and were he can help me. I was only able to do 2 pull ups, 55 crunches in two minutes, my mile and a half was done in 12:17, my 3 mile was done in 30 minutes. We have been PTing five days a week, and my 3 mile has dropped down to 29:19, and I am now at 6 pull-ups. So as long as this stupid Medical crap will go through with MEPs, I can finally start on my way to earning the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor that I have wanted since I was 5 years old.

Chris, You sound like your on your way kid! keep up the hard work.....I had a similar story when I joined, a tad overweight, Running time was right on the edge.....But I put myself into 2 hard PT sessions a day, which both consisted of a long run....Soaked 2 shirts a day in sweat....When I got to Parris Island, there was no problems...they did the rest! Keep up the Good work my man, it will all be worth it.

Thank you Corporal Spevak, I have never truly been the greatest with long distance running. So the three mile run and the pull ups will be a challenge for me. I do not have much body fat on me, thanks to football. I still have to get to 178 to ship out. I am PTing three days a week with the Recruiter and the rest of the Poolee's here in my town. Sergeant Rogers (my recruiter) has taking me pretty much on his wing. As he did my buddy Josh that made him look out of shape hah. Tuesday and Thursdays he hits the sauna with me, and I continue to PT with a buddy of mine that is already a Poolee. In total I am PTing three times a day, five days a week. Biggest thing for me to drop was the food, hah. The motivation of my brothers, and my goal of earning the title of a United States Marine are what are keeping me going. Even with my parents against it.

If you need help with the pull ups, the recon ron pull up program is a really good one. When I started I could barely do two. Now I'm up to 25 pull ups no problem. I know it's on here somewhere, but if you type in "recon ron pullups" on google it should be the first thing that pops up. As far as running goes, just run. That's all you can do. Run till you feel like you can't possibly run any farther - then run another mile!

Zack, thanks I will look into that. I have been doing what my buddy did before went in, back in 2007.The pyramid, do one pull up, ten push ups, two pulls ups, ten push ups. I have started going to five, than when I reach five, ten push ups, four pull ups. Back down to one. It has worked quite a bit. I also use the assisted pull up machine at the gym. Only machine I am even allowed to use hah. As for the running, I am averaging at this time 4 miles, a quarter mile added every week.

Don't keep adding miles, add intensity. You should vary your running to get a good workout. Go to your school track and choose one of the 100m straight aways and sprint it as hard as you can. Then keep that routine (running 300m sprinting 100) and run a few miles doing that. Once it becomes easier sprint farther. Intensity is how you win and succeed.

This is exactly what I do for pullups. It seems to help, but I'm no Chuck Norris. :P

Matt E., yeah it started becoming easier once the body weight started coming down hah. Recruiter told me to do what I had to do to. Well I did, and he just said he didn't want to know how hah. But in my opinion, I did what I had to, to at least get the initial paper work to MEPs

Matt G., I do what you just explained, a buddy of mine is on the marathon team for the Air Force Academy, and also did cross country at my high school, and he suggested that. Also taking a stop watch, and marking different points on the track, or the road (where ever I seem to run), and try to beat the previous days times.

Corporal Spevak, sir yes sir. If it's not me kicking my own ass, it's either my recruiter, or the Gunnery Sergeant in the office that kicks my ass. I had to do an IST before the Gunnery Sergeant would even let me start my paper work. That's one big a** black man I don't want to disappoint or **** off so I give 175% every time. I may not be in the shape a lot of the poolee's are at the recruiting station, but I give them a run for their money. Just wish I would of made this decision before my buddy Josh shipped out, it'd of been easier to lose the weight with him hah.

Don't forget swimming in your PT schedule. Learn to swim hard, so much that you can feel yourself sweat even in the water.

Corporal Michael, sir yes sir. I have been swimming every chance I get. Most of the pools around here are closed for the Florida gay winters. So I've been swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. Also been doing some of my running out on the sand during the weekeneds. Gives the girlfriend time to work on her tan. So she doesn't complain hah.

Yeah, cold weather no snow. 90 degrees on Chrismas lol. Kind of defeats the purpose of winter in my opinion. Plus I used to spend winters with my biological dad in Michigan, and three years in Iceland.

Well, recruiter informed me last night I'll be going to MEPs on Monday night. Now I just need to decide between 03xx or 04xx (wanting 0481).

I got my son-in-law's run time down by teaching him to sprint his guts out. I know, it was Army, but it works. Got him in anyway.

Corporal Michael, you sir are correct lmao. Either one I believe I would be happy with. I got to experience both during summers to Camp Lejeune with my brothers, one is 0311 and the other was 0481. So at least I would know what I was getting my self into a little a head of time hah;)

Sergeant Sparks, yes sir. Recruiters been busting my a** on them here lately. I finally got it down in 28:56. It don't help, he's a short guy with longish legs for a short person. I was destined short with short legs hah. Even though he's shorter than me, I still talk two steps to his one lol

My 3 mile time has gone down a lot. I am now below 28 mins. I'm around 27:43. Sergeant Sparks, took your advice, and I ran as fast as my legs would take me, than some. The Staff Sergeant at the recruiting station is trying to dig through wtf ever the Navy did. I was DQed from them with a Courtesy Review, and never been to MEPs. So he's trying to nick pick things for me. Also starting this weekened going to go stay with my brother, that recently got done with Active duty after 13 years. He was Recon, went through Scout sniper school, but the instructor told him it would be for him being he had a pretty decent size family going on (four kids), so he went back to 0311, after spending 4 years with Recon. Also, I decided on Career Field, going 03xx, wanting 0311 or 0331. Should know something from my recruiter and the Staff Sergeant by tomorrow Wensday hopefully.

So it was run penguin ruuun. I think by the end of it, I was just laughing so hard, if I didn't run faster, I was going to collapse. I swear, the Gunny is either busting our a**es or a comedian.

Sergeant Sparks, no need to worry on the insensitivity. My brothers were running right around 16:00- 16:30s. So they bust my ass quite a bit. And I am sure by the end of this, I will have heard a lot more insensitivity.

Alright, so I just got back from MEPs. They called my recruiter at around 3AM this morning, and told me to high tail it up their. I ended up being half asleep during the whole process. I was BSed with all the doctors, and the doctor that swears up and down he never disqualed me with the Navy. Even if it was the guys signature on their lol. He said he was on vacation during that time frame. Oh well, I at least got to finally go to MEPs. Though, in the rush this morning the recruiter forgot to grab my medical papers  So I will have to go back up their after next week being I will be out of town. The Doctor wants me to take some test (he made it seem like a test for crazy people lmao) and while I did that he would review my papers in person. The Classifer is working on my contract, and he said being that what is going on/ has had happened to me, he will gurantee me what I want. I will make sure it is on my contract at that time also. I know better to play that game lol. But right now, if I can get through the test (with gay questions of, do you ever think of killing your self blah blah stuff). That I will ship to Parris Island on 01 Feb. So hopefully all goes well. I am probably one of few people that fully understand Hurry Up and Wait with out ever being to MEPs, or officially being in the DEP program. lol

Glad things are finally rolling for you. Have you decided which MOS you'd like to go for? I'm an 0481 and love the job. I know a lot of guys up at Lejeune/Cherry Point in LS (mainly 0481's).

So, MEPs has disqualified me once again. I took all of the test I was suppose too. That MEPs told me to take, and they said it still wasn't enough. The recruiters, and I are kind of dumb founded on this. Being we can't think of anything else. I made a joke of just sending my counsler I had back in middle school up their. Being that I've never OFFICIALLY had my physical, I can't send my med docs to BUMED. So we're goin to sit on them for a little bit, being MEPs closes next week for the holidays, and opens back up in Jan. So hopefully the doctors will have gotten laid enough or something to finally put my papers through. In the meantime, I am working with a few other fatbodies, two of them having to lose about 50 pounds. While I am still continueing to lose my weight. I'm down to 183, and need to be at 178 MAX weight to ship. I want to be at 165-170 when I ship. Hell, if I do not get the chance to go to Parris Island, than I have at least had the motivation to finally loose some weight. ;)
