Edwards Marines shows MCMAP techniques to medics

10/28/2008 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- When the 95th Medical Group Facility Security team was looking for training that would be essential for a small-framed medic guarding a building's entry control point, they crossed from the blue and asked for help from the few and the proud.

The team received an introductory Marine Corps Martial Arts Program course from the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 764 here Oct. 23 at the Rosburg Fitness Center.

"This martial arts program gives our Marines the chance to receive training on hand-to-hand combat," said Marine Staff Sgt. Gabriel Cruz, HMM 764 operations chief and a MCMAP instructor. "It is a variation of different martial arts including karate, judo, aikido and Greco-Roman wrestling."

According to Capt. Jeffrey Scott, 95th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Health and Human Performance Flight commander and the FST chief, the introductory course was part of annual readiness training for the security team. The FST is responsible for protecting assets during contingencies and executing force protection condition measures for the 95th MDG.

"We gave them a self-confidence course," Sergeant Cruz said. "The course ensures that anybody with any size can fight somebody who is bigger than them."

The Edwards Marines showed the medics various techniques including how to punch, low crawl and fireman carry. The Airmen also learned proper execution for headlocks, basic strikes, jabs and throws.

"We had great time training with the Marines, and we got to learn some skills that medics don't typically learn," Captain Scott said. "We barely scratched the surface of MCMAP, but the training was a good start for building self-confidence."

Sergeant Cruz said they are open to providing MCMAP training for interested Edwards Airmen. The martial arts program is a good team-building concept and a confidence builder.

"It builds your mental, physical and character discipline to get that perfect warrior," he said. "This is what we call a MCMAP synergy."
