RAPID RIVER - Leo R. Hazen, 84, of 8548 Old Wilsey Bay 12th Road, in Rapid River (Stonington), passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at his home in Stonington.

He was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Walled Lake, Mich., and was the son of Clyde and Myrtie (Coe) Hazen. Leo was raised in Walled Lake, Mich., and attended Walled Lake schools.

He served in World War II the the U.S. Marines from 1943 until 1946.

Leo worked in construction until 1948 and then was employed with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, retiring as the undersheriff in 1980.

On Sept. 10, 1949, he married the former Phyllis Hawley in Ludington, Mich., and they made their home in Walled Lake, Mich., until they moved to Stonington.

Leo enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family.

He was a member of the Escanaba Church of Christ.

Leo R. Hazen is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Stonington; sons, Terry (Gayle) Hazen of Fairfield, Calif., Mark (Denise) Hazen of Oceanview, Hawaii; daughter, Gloria Hazen of Green Valley, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Tracy Hazen, Brooks Hazen, Thomas Szocinski, Annjellica Zavala, and Leo Hazen; two great-grandchildren, Tom Szocinski and Aiden Szocinski; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Laverne and Gerald Hazen.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. today, Oct. 6, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Leo R. Hazen will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Grant officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services at the Escanaba Church of Christ.

Burial will take place in the Oakland Hills Cemetery in Novi, Mich.
