The Jacksonville USO is offering a way for local residents to clear out unneeded items while supporting the troops.

Through its second annual yard sale, the USO hopes to raise $1,000 to support programs they offer for area military, assistant director Judy Robinson said.

"It's their chance to empty out their closets and it goes to a good cause. If they didn't get a chance to do their own yard sale this year, we're here for them," she said.

Last year, the yard sale raised about $700. So far, clothing and books have been donated for the yard sale, but donations are not limited to just that. Electronics, furniture and anything else that could be sold are also welcome, Robinson said.

Funds raised at the yard sale will go to supporting USO programs such as Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas dinner, breakfast with Santa and rack packs for single Marines.

"We go out and solicit sponsorship for the different activities, but this helps cover the difference," Robinson said, explaining it costs thousands of dollars to keep the programs running.

Donations will be accepted until Sept. 25, allowing a day to organize the items before the yard sale, which will be held Sept. 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"It was a success last year and it's another way to support the troops - just one more way to support the troops," Robinson said.

Donations can be dropped off during USO hours of operation - Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Those interested in making a monetary donation can deliver it to the USO or mail it to 9 Tallman St., Jacksonville, NC 28540.
