View Full Version : Leadership in Boot Camp

Rains

I have heard that dureing boot camp there is a platoon leader or recruit that leads the other recruits and motivate and help keep moral up, is this true? and if so would our Drill Instructers pick a recruit to hold that position based on character and leadership abilitys, or is it something that is just sort of a free for all?

And, could you Marines give me advice on how A Drill Instructer's mind works and what to do to stand out in my DI's mind.

One more thing I forgot to add: What is the minimum weight requirment to get into Boot Camp? I am 5'11 and weight 121 pounds.. I'm shure that I can pile more muscle mass on before next fall but im worryed that the minimum weight requirment might be higher then I will weight.

In the first few weeks,,,what stands out is what doesn't stand out,,so don't look for 'special attention'.

I was picked for platoon leader cause I was tall, fast, confident, and helped others when I could. Then I lost it all by loosing in pugil sticks. Basically, someone else out-shined me.

Rains
07-23-08, 02:39 PM
So it is based on how well you preform?

Well I have the mind set that I am going to attack Boot Camp with the best I can possibly give and help my fellow recruits as much as possible, hopefully I will get the chance to be a leader.

The words you are look for are "guide" and "squad leader." Do a search on those, resourceful one.

honestly? they ask in the first week "who wants too be a guide? squad leaders" then they pick em.after that they will usually change,D.I will pick the guy who tells everyone too shutup online (because you will talk, you undisciplined things :P) most of you will hate the guide/squaD leaders because they tell you what to do and correct you,and your not going too appreciate it at first.they look for the more squared away recruits, the ones who get on line the fastest, the ones who make there rack and hygeine the fastest, the ones who help other recruits if there slow.and of course..the ones who sound off :)

Sgt0331
07-23-08, 10:40 PM
The squad leaders and guide changed alot during the first two phases of boot, they would do something stupid or be outshined and they would be replaced. During third phase is generally when the guide and squad leaders will not be replaced as easily.

How a DI's mind works? You got to be ****ing me, dude, a DI checks his mind at the door when he enters DI training school. You will see what I mean if and/or when you report to boot camp, many days you will voice the famous quote of many recruits before you "what the f**k, has this dude lost his mind or what".

THAT AINT IT
07-24-08, 09:38 AM
How a drill instructors mind works? Really? If you figure that out while you're there let the rest of us know.

Let me clarify on the question of how a DI's mind works: Does anyone know what he is thinking as he screams down your neck? Is he truly ****ed off as hell at you or is it all a act/show.

Let me clarify on the question of how a DI's mind works: Does anyone know what he is thinking as he screams down your neck? Is he truly ****ed off as hell at you or is it all a act/show.

Well the DI doesn't wake up mad. He awakes, gets dressed and walks into the squadbay and someone pushes his buttons! Is he truly pizzed? Well someone screws up on something that he spent many hours teaching the correct way to do, would he be pizzed?

Drill Instructors are Trainers, not actors! There is no other way of wording this question, so there is no other answer!

I understand, I was under the impression that the Drill Instructers woke you up in the morning screaming their heads off and continued screaming all day(not that I will mind, I will love it all).

My dad(4 years army and 24 years retired Coast Guard) said that his Drill Instructers would throw metal barrels down the middle of the bunk house and start screaming and turning peoples matresses over and stuff like that, LOL.

Believe me it isn't as hard to get the job as it is to lose it. I didn't become a squad leader until about week 3, but I kept it until the end. You have to be good at everything. Leadership, motivation, not screwing up yourself, drill, initiative, etc. etc. I was lucky enough to show that I could accomplish this. Being one of these positions is no joke. You will get killed on nearly a daily basis. You will be responsible for ever action taken by every individual in your squad....OH WELL HOLY ****...SOUNDS LIKE THE MARINE CORPS. If you have it you have it now....otherwise you can learn from others gain advice, take the good and leave the bad and gain it on your own. Only if you are willing.

Look kid, if you want to be something bad enough, it won't happen. It's like watching the pot boil and it seems to never do it.

I would recommend that you go into boot camp with the attitude of becoming a United States Marine and forget all the other crap that can and will happen in boot camp, you are sounding like a glory hound and those son's-of-*****es get my Marines killed.

I'm glad you want to join my Corps, just do it for the right reasons and everything else will come with time, I promise you that.

What goes through a DI's mind? How do I make these piece of scum civilian pukes look and act like the finest fighting force in the world, ready to face every challenge and survive and do that to the best of my ability? TRAIN THEM HARD. TRAIN THEM WELL. START TRAINING BEFORE THE ENEMY WAKES UP. TRAIN THEM MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN THE ENEMY TRAINS. REPEAT. REPEAT. REPEAT. THE ENEMY MUST FEAR YOU. When you wake up each morning, THE DI WILL BE WAITING. OOOORAH!
How do you become a leader? The DI will find the leader in you, and the leaders amongst you. Your opportunities await you, right behind the DI.

the whole DI mentality is to train for combat, the yelling and IT is stress that one might feel in battle... the PT is well... PT, the rifle range, drill teaches you dicipline and when you put all that together you have some bad ass Marines at the end of 3 months.

07-25-08, 01:29 PM
Well from my understanding the reason you will be calling everyone sir/mam is because you don't rate a rank of your own and by extension don't rate to call anyone by their rank. Atleast in bootcamp that will hold true but for now either is fine in my opinion.

Petz
07-25-08, 01:32 PM
in boot camp it's taught for an entirely different reason.... you'll learn that later when you become a DI ( I think you'd want to)

as for using rank... it's very much like a title you carry with you as a civilian. "Mr" is like using SSgt or LCpl.

If your worried about money then just buy eggs and amino acids. Eggs are less than $5 a dozen and a bottle of amino acids is less than $20. The bottle should last about a month.

Eggs have a lot of protein which build muscle. Amino acids help break it down to where the body can use it. Any meat is good for you though. Eggs just seem to be the cheapest.

You have plenty of time so don't worry.

Ok thanks. How much amino acid should I put in the eggs or drink?

Just eat the eggs like you normally do. Fried, scrambled, in rice, over -easy, or whatever you choose.

http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2935933&cp=&sr=1&origkw=amino&kw=amino&parentPage=search

Those are the amino acids. $18 a month for them. I'd take them within 30 minutes of working out and eat also. Supposedly, and I don't know how much truth there is in this, you need to eat something high in protein within 30 min of working out.

I'm not sure if it is true or not, but I've been doing it and gained 5lbs of lean mass in a couple of weeks and I'm not changing my diet at all other than when I eat.

Either way it's cheap and should work out pretty good for you. Peanut butter is also pretty cheap too.

Ahh, peanut butter. that sounds liek a good idea too.

By the way, I just ate 3 scrambled eggs, a glass of soy milk, a plum and a teaspoon of amino acid. and I am getting ready to go work out.

I think I am going to go throw up!!!

Coffee for breakfast.

Sammich for dinner.

Couple of beers, after working out (moving my chair on the deck, out of the sun).

Go to the V.

Dinner at the Y with a Chippy.

Pitcher of Martinis.

Life is good.
