LAS VEGAS -- San Diego State football team will have fall boot camp -- literally.
Beginning Aug. 4, the Aztecs will spend their first three days of fall camp at Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base in San Diego
"We are extremely excited to partner with the Marines right there in San Diego," coach Chuck Long said. "It's our way of giving back to the Marines. It's a win-win. We're going to be available to them ... Be around their coaches and make it as interactive as they want. They have four or five teams on that base, and they want their coaches to get around us."
Long said he'd been thinking about training on the base for a while. After the San Diego State golf team spent a night on the base and had a positive reaction, Long put into motion a plan to get his 105 players in the barracks for the first day of camp.
The trip, Long said, would be one of learning and appreciation. He said he'd have surprises for his players, which might include a routine similar to a boot camp. The players and coaches will sleep in the barracks and eat in the mess hall. They'll practice on the field where the Marines play.
"As long as it's nothing like 'Full Metal Jacket,'" running back Tyler Campbell said. "It's just an opportunity for us to get closer to each other as a team, being in a different place, a different atmosphere."
It will also be a chance for the Aztecs to learn about leadership before the team comes home on Aug. 7 to resume fall camp on campus.
"I want our guys to be around the troops and also get with their leadership and give us some of their leadership techniques and philosophies and teach that to our young guys," Long said. "As a head coach you look for any and all edges you can get in the game of football. I look at this as an edge and that's the way we'll go into it."
