Marines Return To Summerfest For Annual Pull-Up Contest

The U.S. Marine Corps are back at Summerfest hosting their annual pull-up contest.

In the first three days of Summerfest, a few hundred people have stopped in to test their strength with the Marines, said Staff Sergeant Fernando Gonzalez.

To walk away with the prize t-shirt, men must do a max set of 20 pull-ups. For women, a chin-up must be held for at least 70 seconds Gonzalez said.

One female contestant said the challenge was much harder then expected.

Even physically-fit contestants were having trouble completing the challenge.

Last year, over 7,000 people stopped by the Marine tent to signup for information, compete and win prizes.

“The Marines have been at Summerfest for six or seven years. Once it started it never stopped,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said the Marines were not at Summerfest for recruitment purposes but simply to advertise the Marine Corps.

Gonzalez is currently spending his third year stationed in Milwaukee.
