hi all & Marines, allow me to introduce myself:
my name is Jimmy, and I have extreme interest in joining the Corps.
I am considering 0311 or joining the Marine Band.
My questions to you all:

I have heard that Marine Band recruits get promoted to SSgt. when they graduate boot camp. Is this true?

I have also heard that they are automatically assigned to D.C. (which means they never fight?? I'm confused.) I'd like to be in the Marine Band, (E-6 would really be nice right out of the gate) but I really want to see battle as well. I want to serve as a Marine rifleman for this great country of ours.
Is there an alternative that I am missing? Is it one MOS or the other, and that's it?

Thanks for all your help.

Do you believe in the man on the moon and still think the moon is made from cheese?

Man, I hope whatever you're taking has been prescribed by a Doctor.

No that only applies to the civilian corps in the Marine Corps Band.

Contrary to what is popular belief , the "Presidents own" are civilian contraced to the Corps for 4 years at a time, with the starting pay grade of E-6, plus they DO NOT ATTEND BOOT CAMP!
---------------------------------------------------

The United States Marine Band, colloquially known as "The President's Own", was established by an Act of Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_of_Congress) on July 11 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_11), 1798 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1798), and is America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States)’s oldest professional musical organization. The U.S. Marine Band is the only musical unit that bears the title “The President’s Own” and whose mission is to provide music for the President of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States) and the Commandant of the Marine Corps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commandant_of_the_Marine_Corps). Today, "The President's Own" also includes the Marine Chamber Orchestra and Marine Chamber Ensembles. The band is separate from its sister Drum and Bugle Corps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Drum_and_Bugle_Corps), "The Commandant's Own".
There are eleven active duty Marine Corps field bands and one civilian corps. The eleven active duty bands are composed of United States Marines who attend bootcamp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps_Boot_Camp) and then "A" school at the Navy School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk%2C_Virginia).
The President's Own is a military corps band. Members of "The President's Own" are active duty members of the United States Marine Corps, serving under a 4-year Marine Band only contract for military service, however they do not attend Marine Corps recruit training (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recruit_training).

------------------------------------------

The only catch is that the "Presidents Own" are hand picked and are not Marines!

So you want to carry an M16 or a Tuba... you just can't make your mind up huh? Close your eyes and think of being in the mud or running from building to building. Ok now close your eyes and picture a music note sheet in front of your face all day long. There is your answer.

A very confused wannabee............

That is an understatement!

"When facing a difficult task, act as though it is impossible to fail. If you're going after Moby Dick, take along the tartar sauce."

Do something...even if it's wrong! Make a decision!

It must be the day and age and I must be getting to the fogy age....but I don't remember ever have to to make this many decisions like these kids are faced with or asking when I signed the dotted line! Made a decision stuck with it...lived with it...and ran with it....until Uncle Sam said to walk!

Good luck to you! If you play in the band...play the violen...it worked for Jack Benny!

lol, good to see the Corps has a good sense of humor :p

i play saxophone, guitar, and piano. obviously there is no position for a pianist, so it would be either guitar or sax.
but, as much as i love music, i think i am being called to serve by fighting.

Pvt, I answered this question so why did you have to make it seem like I didn't? I have been out a long time, but I was taught that a PVT doesn't argure with a NCO! Believe me Pvt, you don't want on my bad side! You wouldn't like me when I get angry! Try that with a active duty Corporal and see what happens! He'll hand you your head after you have cleaned the heads!

I will intertain an opoligy now Pvt!

Musicman, as Tinman pointed out you have to know what you're doing and well, to be selected for the "Presidents Own Band"! The members are hand selected through out the country to audition for this Band. Not everyone is selected, but they do promote them to the rank of SSgt to make it a little more appealig to go along with the prestige of playing in the "BEST BAND" in the country. Once they leave the Band they have all kinds of opportunitites for great jobs with other bands through out the world....looks good on a reume' you might say!
