AFGHANISTAN — Two Twentynine Palms Marines were killed in combat here Thursday, according to the Department of Defense.

Capt. Eric Daniel Terhune, 34, of Lexington, Ky., and Lance Cpl. Andrew Francis Whitacre, 21, of Bryant, Ind., died while conducting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan.

Their deaths were announced Friday by the Department of Defense.

Lexington, Ky., television station channel 18 reported Terhune previously served two tours in Iraq.

They were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, aboard the Twentynine Palms Marine base.

Terhune and Whitacre are the fifth and sixth 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment Marines known to have died in Afghanistan’s Farah Province in western Afghanistan in less than a week.

Sgt. Michael Toussiant-Hyle Washington, 20, Lance Cpl. Layton Bradly Crass, 22, Pfc. Dawid Pietrek, 24, and Pfc. Michael Robert Patton, 19, died in Farah Province June 14.

All four Marines died June 14 while supporting combat operations in Farah Province, Afghanistan. International news reports stated they were killed in a roadside bomb.

The 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, whose motto is “Ready for all, yielding to none,” is in Afghanistan to train and mentor the national police force. The Marines deployed earlier this year.
