Lejeune Marine killed in Iraq

A Camp Lejeune Marine died Monday in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Thursday.
First Lt. Matthew R. Vandegrift, 28, of Littleton, Colo., was fatally injured while conducting combat operations in Basrah, Iraq, according to a press release.
Vandegrift was a member of the Lejeune-based 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment and was assigned to the 1st Iraqi Army Division, Military Transition Team, I Marine Expeditionary Force. He joined the Marine Corps on March 23, 2005 and was trained as an artillery officer.
