Naval base opens 'Mud Run' to the public

From staff reports
Monday, April 7, 2008

Naval Base Ventura County is looking for a few who would be proud to get dirty.

The base's second "Mud Run" — modeled on the Marines' famous Camp Pendleton Mud Run — is open to the public this year.

The race starts at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and will take runners on a 2-mile course that begins at the Naval Construction Training Center Headquarters building at Port Hueneme. It ends with a series of obstacles as well as several 2- and 3-foot-deep mud pits.

Participants are advised to wear old clothes because although the competition will be fair, it's impossible to run a clean race.

Civilians will get a chance to run with active duty military and base employees. The top-finishing men and women in five age categories will receive awards.

A shuttle van will transport guests from the base's Pleasant Valley gate to and from the race.

Online race registration is at http://www.active.com. Cost is $15 for civilians and $10 for military. There is an extra cost of $5 for registering the day of the race.

Checks should be made payable to Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department and received by mail today. Mailing address is Commanding Officer, Naval Base Ventura County, MWR Department N92V, 311 Main Road, Suite 1, Point Mugu, CA 9304001. The first 200 to register receive a free T-shirt.

Race day check-in is 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The race begins at 12:30 p.m.

For information, call the Athletics Department at 989-7940 or 989-7378.
