I was just wondering what exactly this was? I understand you get NJP'ed for bad behavior and things like that that but what specificly are they issued for? and how serious are they? Thanks for any reply.
It means non-judicial punishment. Pretty much happens whenever you break a military law. Military law= Uniform Code of Military Justice or UCMJ. Much of the laws are the same as civilian laws, some are different/strange, like the law against anal sex.

NJP is for minor violations of regs, standing orders, or simply when you've ****ed off the Sgt Major. My first NJP was for an unsat haircut when I showed up to my first formation. I've had a high and tight ever since. ha ha.
You can get extra duty, be restricted to barracks, or loss of liberty time. These are really light punishments and usually follow a severe asschewing by the CO.
