It's not exactly the first place most people expect to see a hard-charging Marine. But Hairtage Salon and Day Spa has been welcoming many with its Warrior Spa Day.

Warrior Spa Day, created by the salon in November, was designed to help men coming back from deployments feel good about themselves again, said Gail Lanier, the salon's general manager.

"We have been truly blessed by word of mouth in Iraq," said Marty Keeley, marketing and assistant manager. "Getting a guy to come through the door of a salon is tough, but once we get them in, they are often repeat customers."

The four-hour spa treatment is designed to cleanse the entire body of all foreign debris and treat the long-term effects of windburn, sunburn and sand, according to a flier.

Lanier said the services include a "Devil Dog" mineral salt treatment, a Leatherneck therapeutic massage, a warrior facial and a sea service spa pedicure.

"If they don't like that specific package, we can make a different one for them," Lanier said. "We are really flexible about the packages."

Eighty-six percent of the employees working at the salon and spa are affiliated with the military, and 65 percent are married to Marines, Keeley said.

"We understand that our clientele and our employees are associated with the military," Lanier said. "Therefore, we wanted to come up with an offer for them to relax and enjoy our services."

Getting them in the door, she said, is the first step.

"Getting men to relax, after being in Iraq or anytime, is often difficult," Lanier said. "After most men get their first massage, we have little trouble getting them to return."

There have been many reports of personnel returning from a tour of duty suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Keeley said.

"In my day, the way you dealt with stress was alcohol, marathon running or seclusion," Keeley said. "Now, with PTSD, it is OK to seek out relaxation and get the body clocks set correctly. Massage is a great way to relax."

Located on Henderson Drive extension, Hairtage Salon is at the end of a long, winding driveway lined with trees, flowers and beautiful landscaping that leads up to a house on a hill where visitors are greeted with a smile.

The first question, after checking in, is whether the hosts can get the client a beverage.

"Part of our signature is asking the client if they would like something to drink," Lanier said. "We will also never give them a plastic cup, we give only glass cups and it is always garnished with a slice of lemon. It is just the quality of service we like to portray.

"The placement and design of the building and grounds is to make us a getaway from the business of life," Keeley added. "Designing it that way was all part of the plan to get our clients to relax."

The Hairtage Salon and Day Spa has been in business for 12 years but has been in its present location for the last 10 years, Lanier said.

"The building is only 10 years old and was built and designed for the salon," Lanier said. "Sharon Gurganus, my sister and owner of the salon, also did all the decorating."

The Hairtage Salon and Day Spa was created to be a higher-end facility for the upper class clientele that Jacksonville has, Lanier said.

The salon and spa is a family owned and run business.

"We are run with family values and ethics, and that is portrayed to our client," Lanier said. "Also, since we are a small company, we are able to do more for our clients than a corporation could."

The vision for Hairtage is to provide pampering and quality services for clients, Keeley said.

Packages and single services are available, from pedicures and haircuts to laser treatments and permanent makeup.

Gift cards are also available, Keeley and Lanier said.
