After taking sometime to look through these forums I've discovered there are many people out there just like me who are wanting to join the USMC but have some serious weight to drop. Basically, I am looking for someone who is wanting to join the marines but needs to loose weight and get in shape. Sort of like a pal just so each of us can have someone to help keep us motivated and to remind each other of why we are doing this. basically like an on-line work out buddy. Anybody thats interested in making a new friend as well as having a budy there for you on your way to boot camp PM me or just leave a comment! Also any advie from anybody:marine, non marine, anyone to help us with any aspect on our road to boot camp I would truly appericiate it.

Thank you for all of your help:iwo:

Hi there-my weight is just on the borderline...I'm 5'1" and weigh between 115-127.I usually wear between a 6-10..I love working out and I just made a resolution to do it everyday.

I mostly need to run (5 mi) and work on my abs.My arms are pretty cut but I'm always interested in new excercises.I have a lot of muscle that I need to tone desperately.I eat healthfully too and cut out as many sweets and soda and stuff to help.

That's a first: cut out all the unnecessary junk food.Don't ban it completely, but control it.Start eating a balanced diet on a regular basis-these are basics.Work out gently if you're not used to it at first-DON'T dive in and start working out furiously unless you want an injury....

I can't always be online and stuff, but if you want someone to work with you...sure,I could.I have studied a lot of human anatomy and am talented in the field of nutrition and stuff.I don't have a license,I just offer advice and use what I know.

I'm finishing the last of my hs classes and will ship out to PI in June,if I get driver's ed out my way. When do you plan to join the Corps?

I have some friendly advice for you,,,

You must be kidding me? Do you think an on-frickin-line workout buddy is going to help you? Do you think this is RichardSimmons dot com? Do you really expect that reading a post, or chatting online with some poolee/wannabe while your sitting on your azz eatin potato chips is going to motivate you? Man this country is doomed. You can't just look in the mirror and be motivated to make some changes? It's a grand idea that you have here but it's not that simple or easy and if it was that easy then when you're done why don't you write a book, better yet why don't you just get outside right now and run. Hurry up I said run....faster now.

You say I want to join the USMC,,, blah, blah, blah, sounds pretty romantic doesn't it? Get the tattoo, travel to foreign lands and screw beautiful women? Well come on son, get your rear end in gear; you want motivation doesn't the fact that you might someday be at USMC boot camp motivate you enough? Online workout buddy, man you got to be kidding me. Get off your azz in front of the computer so much, how's that for motivation?

Your welcome, I hope you truly appriciate it.

Hey-I'm not one to start fights, but I am going to say, that online workout buddies work out great.I'd like to see some of you Marines try it.It DOES work, whether you like it or not. Results may vary.

Don't poke fun of other wannabes-you might find yourself in the same predicatment.I know someone who is like that.He was in the Army though and he felt sorry for himself.Today he is extremely overweight but refuses help.

Its okay if someone wants to shape up for the Corps. You wait, and this young man will cross the finish line.He just needs some help.I am willing to provide it.If you Marines ever needed that kind of help,I would gladly do the same for you.

You guys receive all my due honor and respect, but some of your comments were (I'm sorry) rude and inappropriate.I spend lots of time in front of my computer too-anyone wants to try me.I am addicted to it.

Yet I work out and am very capable of making my DI proud.I am fit and trim and all that.I'd like to see a show of brotherhood, sir.I'm not sure that your advice would ever come handy to me anytime soon.

I think ALL of us could spend a little less time on the Internet (including me and I'm working on that).

When you join the DEP you get a group of poolees to help motivate you if you need. Otherwise grind the work and use the great feeling afterward as motivation.

Also the comments are not to hurt, but they are to make you realize that the Marine Corps is only for those who are really motivated in doing it. If you want to lose the weight to join the Marines then you must prove to yourself and to the Drill Instructors that you really want it bad. Motivation is good when you feel you have exhausted yourself so much and someone is there to help you past that breaking point, but when it's an online workout partner I really cannot see that much motivation to come from it.

Your motivation should be to get the EGA -- not an online <s>butt</s> work out buddy.

I'm just trying to do my part Gunny! SF

And I changed my mind,,,I'll be your online workout buddy Adam, so now buddy get your azz outside and run, and while you're at it to make it more interesting pretend that I'm right beside you yelling, run Adam,,run. C'mon we can do it!

And just as critical as it is that you start doing some PT, you must also push away from the table, and from here on out when you go to eat that extra burger, put it down son; pretend again that I'm about to smack you upside your melon. And also Adam, permanently visualize me about to smack you upside your melon every time you grab a jelly donut, a candy bar, or 2 pac of Hostess Ho-Ho's (BTW, are they still allowed to call them Ho-Ho's or is that offensive to fat ho's?). Someday in the future you'll be ok, I'll save you. But first you must save yourself, get to running,,,,,,my online workout buddy. cha-cha-cha

 Word to the wise, don't challenge those who have earned the title. Don't tell those who have earned the title what is or is not appropriate, and those who have earned the title probably aren't going to need a wannabee's help anytime soon. You think thewookie's advice was tough love? That wasn't scratching the surface. That was nowhere near the surface! The only way of making your Drill Instructor proud is by walking across that graduation deck a U.S Marine, so don't count your eggs yet.

Heed the Marine's advice!

This time next year I AM going to be heading out to get my EGA and maybe even fight along side some of you. I am not asking for your pitty, but all Im looking for is a friends to maybe share workout tips or dieting tips or to even talk about the corps with. So thank you for those who are suportive and to those who arnt you dont know me, you do not know what I have done, and you do not obviosly know where I am going! So take this is you may, and I truly respect you all but I will be earning a title of Marine. and when I get in losing 250 lbs will make this accomplishment all the more better.

Are you ****ing serious?!? Tell me you are not ****ing serious! Tell me you're joking! Tell me!

While you're trying to rescue him, and helping Marines that "need" a poolees help PTing, let's throw him a pity party too. Make the arrangements, plenty of pity to go around.

Original poster, put feet to the pavement. There's a sticky here that has some good info for loosing weight. If you want it you have to go get it! None of that ^ femine pitty bull**** is going to make you drop 250lbs!

You're damn right you came across as "some guy." Some nasty who can't capitalize Marine or write out Eagle Globe and Anchor. I don't know about other Marines but to me, thats lazy, nasty, and disrespectful. How about taking a few more spelling and grammar classes. Kid, you are also one fat mother fvcker. There's more than a few things going against you in your quest. How about taking a 3 year break from the computer, TV, and couch. And come back only when you have a picture of the new healthy looking you, with an Eagle Globe and Anchor.

Listen, I'm not going to argue with you because I have a little experience to back up what I say. I told you, I think its lazy and disrespectful to abbreviate Eagle Globe and Anchor. Negative on the kindegartan thing. I think not capitalizing and not using proper grammar is lazy, disgusting, and reflects poorly on the Marine Corps. Until you earn your Eagle Globe and Anchor, I could care less what your fatass thinks of me. Ethics? Where the hell did that even come from, you don't even know what that is. I'm not going to get into any "cyberfight" with a fatass or a poolee, it doesn't honor Marines or the Corps, I just wanted to clear those few things up.

Re-read your comments Marine. You said you are not going to argue but you do. Not only that, but you verbally attack someone who you seem to feel is beneath you. That is not how we, as Marines need to behave. Need I remind you that you and I were once lowly civilians and wannabe poolies? You need to take a deep breath and relax. Then try to handle this in a much more professional manner. You may not agree with everything said but this civilian will have his chance to back up what he says. Loose that weight and become the Marine he wants to be. If he does then outstanding for him and for our Corps! If he doesn't? Then who cares? He will not be one of us so it will not matter what he does.

By the way, you miss spelled kindergarten.

And here is Chili's reply...

1. I am a Marine, I don't have to try anything from a wanna be that I really don't want to...so, No.

2. As a U.S. Marine, and I checked my ID card and I still am one, I don't need help from a wanna be...I KNOW what I need to do...

3. As Anyone wants to try you at what? Are you asking to wrestle/box/kickbox/thumb war one of us?

4. I doubt that. They will only be proud of you IF you graduate.

Don't believe for a second, lass, that you can come in here and "pull my punk card" as we say. Especially over the internet. I don't believe myself superior to ANYONE...as a matter of fact, I count myself LUCKY to be in the presence of all these other Marines...to count myself as one of the brotherhood...but I did this by HARD work, and catch this...ready...

SELF Motivation!!!!! Wow...did I just say that? Yep. Not an internet buddy that could sit back, eat a twinkie, (don't want to offend anyone with the words ho-ho) and lie about what they are doing...

That's the key to success in the Corps...the big Self word...

that's it...

this site is for us wannabes/poolees to ask the MARINES questions and get advice, not the other way around!! take what they say with a grain of salt because i can PROMISE you that any "disrespectful and rude comments" these guys give you,is nothing compared to what your D.I (if you even get that far) is going to do to you. if you cant handle these guys, how are you going to make it through Marine Corps recruit training?!

The funny part is I'm not worried about it! I know after I bust my ass off, work hard as hell, then bust my ass again, I know it will all be worth it to earn my goal and to show these guys who think im just some fat f*** that I was/am serious. So I'm not worried about it, the joke (to me) is on them. I look forward to one day calling them my brothers!

Don't take this the wrong way as my first post here - I'm sure I'll get the third degree for being a lurker and beginning with this post, rather than an official introduction in a separate thread... but oh well.

While not nececssarily exclusive to this thread about motivation and losing weight, I've noticed that a lot of the responses towards people seeking legitimate help and advice, are far from constructive.

True enough, we are here to ask Marines questions, and what else is there to do but to accept and respect the responses that we get? At the same time, I can't seem to understand why so many of the questions asked are answered with such disdain. People come here for advice, not for a Boot Camp experience. There's no reason to respond as a DI would. I find it hard to respect the advice of someone (regardless of their title or credentials), whose only role in posting responses is to cut down or mock those who are seeking legitimate advice, and who are either legitimately ignorant or uninformed.

You guys argue "If you can't handle this sh*t on a message board, how are you going to handle your DI?" I say leave that to the DI. If the person can't hack it, then it's no sweat off of your back. Far be it from me to tell you what to write in your responses, but I'd think that as Marines there would generally be more respect (or understanding, at the very least... you were all poolees once) shown for those seeking advice or information.

Example: A 15 year old kid comes in and makes a post: "I want to be a Marine!"

The responses he'll get usually go something like this:

"Grow some balls first, kid"
"Get off the computer, fat body"
"What have you done to EARN it?"

Typically I don't see anyone say:

"Hey man, you'll need to wait a few years at least, before you can try to join. At that point you'll need to go talk to a recruiter and see what your options are. Until then, keeping yourself fit and in shape will reap great rewards for you when that time finally does come. Remember that the Eagle Globe and Anchor is something that you must earn; it's not something that you simply want, and it's certainly not something that you deserve (yet). Any other questions, please use the search feature first. Good luck and welcome!"

I suppose I'm just a little disenchanted that so many of the respones are so ego-centric or arrogant instead of helpful and constructive. You've earned the title of Marine, should be respected for it, and no one can take that away from you. Remember that everyone starts somewhere. Flame away

That's just my $0.02

As for the original poster:

There are many ways to get motivated to get in shape. Sounds like you're on the right track. Keeping an online log of your progress and having a buddy to share and compare with is a great idea to start. You should be motivated outside of that, because you won't always have that sort of competition to keep you going. But seeing your progress in numbers is always fun.

I would also suggest you take a look at the CrossFit program (Google it). It's an incredible program, which, I'm sure, many will go "Blah blah Richard Simmons" to, without giving it a second glance. I imagine these are mostly the types of people who would get smoked by their first CrossFit workout. If you want a fitness program to get you prepared for the military, fire, or police force, there is no better than CrossFit, hands down. I'd be happy to discuss it more with you in private message if you so desire (I don't want to turn this thread into a CrossFit discussion).

In the end, I'm sure you're already aware that you will get out of the Marine Corps what you put into it. Everyone's got to earn it, and it sounds to me like your heart is in the right place.

Try not to be so selective in your analysis of Marine responses. There are many other discussions where we do give a more compassionate reply.

We are Marines. Folks ask us our advice and opinion. We are not in the habit of BS'ing and sugar coating. There is just no time for that.

This is a Marine Corps Forum. Every Poolee comes in understanding that they are obligated to the Poolee Rules (http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29048).

This discussion has seen enough and has come back around off track.
