It might be an MOS closed to Females for the time being, meaning females can not enlist in that MOS at this current time (there may be some already in the MOS but they had enlisted in it before it was closed) I know the branches can do this, if you were trying to go into the navy right now as a corpsman theyd give you a no go because you are a female, its because they are seeing alot more combat than usual right now because of Iraq.

But hey Devil Pup keep your head high and keep trying.

Negative, negative. By law, they cannot keep you out of an MOS just because you *might* see combat or *will* see combat, etc. etc.

Now, if the MOS is full, you won't get it, period. Doesn't matter who or what you are.

The only MOS's that are restricted for women right now are Infantry, Armor, Artillery, and, I believe, CounterIntelligence.

Everything else is open and available for women.

That being said, make sure you know EXACTLY what you are getting into, and CAN DO THE JOB you want.

I don't see why not.....with my three daughters when they were living at home and my bride they were ALL qualified to blow and tear shiat up! I had my own fire team!

I agree that it may a closed MOS...at one time last year or the year before someone (poolee) posted that the grunts were closed for that fiscal year. So you might just have to wait. Don't take any wooden nickles! Good luck!

You go and ask a navy recruiter if the corpsman mos is taking females at this current time, all the ones I've talked to have given a big negative.

Good chance the MOS is full. Otherwise, they are violating DoD policy (unless the navy has suddenly decided to arbitrarily tell females they can't be corpsman).

If that be the case, they are gonna get burned.

The next time I see a navy recruiter, I'll ask.

Ah I think I might know what the problem is. Yes, females can be combat engineers. the all 13XX mos's are open to females (I'm in the 13XX field). However, if you're a reservist, the situation changes. I had a similar experience. If the unit that you would be stationed at as a combat engineer is attached to an infantry unit, you may not be allowed to have that mos or be stationed at that engineer unit. This happened to me. I was originally told that I was going to be stationed at the unit in Baltimore, but when the recrutier realized that it's attached to an infantry unit, I wasn't allowed to be stationed there. Even though that unit only had engineer mos's, I still couldn't be a part of it because of it's connection to the infantry. That's probably what your recruiter was trying to tell you, but he just didn't feel like explaining it.

I did 5 years as a combat engineer in several theaters of operations and none of them was good. What are you looking at to be a engineer? They teach you to do a lot in school but I'm thinking you won't ever get to a line company. You might get to build brigdes or some sorry. my thing was minefields booby traps and grunt work. you really want to look at death inches from your face to make a wrong move. friends have of mine(no pun intended) made that wrong move... just something to think about..

K The Marine Corp Is Short On Engineers And As Bad As They Need Them They Would Rather Have Guy, U Say Why, So If Need Be Lets Say In Iraq They Need 2 Go Out And Do Something And Ur The Only Female Well It Not That U Cant Work But When It Comes To Other Stuff Like Sleeping Out In The Middle Of No Where Or Say Goin To The Head(restroom) They Would Have To Do This Whole Change Of Things Just To Accomidate U And They Would Rather Not Do That 4 Just One Or A Hand Full Of Females, And For Being A Female In That Mos Ur Leader Will Just Kick U Off Lots Of Mission Just For Being A Female.

Females are allowed in all engineer military occupational specialties, officer and enlisted. They are, however, restricted in assignment- currently no females are assigned to combat engineer battalions within the Marine Divisions.

I know this a while after you posted this, but I am a female Combat Engineer, there are a bunch of us out there now. The males still out number us 1 to 30, but when I went to MOS school there was one other female in our class of 20. If you're still a Poole, and if your recruiter is still bull****ting you about there being no females in this field (he's probably infantry...or in denial), tell him to say that **** to me and the 3 other female 1371's I went to Iraq with. Don't settle for any BS he gives you, you want 1371 that bad, make SURE it's on your contract, otherwise it's not guaranteed and you'll probably end up as a Bulk Fueler (1391, don't fall for it, a few of my friends did). I hope this was of some help for you, and good luck.

I am a Combat Engineer 1371, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, A Co. 1st Platoon YOU CAN BE A COMBAT ENGINEER, there are combat engineer females in my platoon, you just cannot leave the wire, which means you cannot be involved in any combat arms missions.

All-
There are currently approximately 78 active duty enlisted female combat engineers and about 20 reservists. There's at least 10 female combat engineer officers, with several more in the pipeline.

There are no restrictions on the employment of Marines- male or female- "outside the wire". The restriction is on assignment of female Marines to units that are reasonably expected to engage in ground combat operations- for combat engineers, that means that females may not be assigned to Combat Engineer Battalions. They may be assigned to Engineer Support Battalions, Marine Wing Support Squadrons, any unit in the Supporting Establishment, and Headquarters units with the Marine Divisions, Marine Wings, and Marine Logistics Groups.

There are no reserve units with combat engineers in LA- the nearest ones are with 4th Landing Support Battalion (Lathrop, San Jose) and Marine Wing Support Squadron 473 (Fresno, San Diego (MCAS Miramar)).

Your recruiter is mistaken when he says that females cannot be combat engineers- I'm sure if he discusses it with his Commanding Officer, Maj Zepko ((323) 294-0601) (a combat engineer), he will get a clearer picture.

Example of female engineer operating outside the wire:
April 11, 2006
DoD Identifies Marine Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Lance Cpl. Juana NavarroArellano, 24, of Ceres, Calif., died April 8 from wounds received while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. She was assigned to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

LCpl NavarroArellano, while not a combat engineer, was on an engineering mission outside the wire when she was struck, and killed, by hostile fire. She was a bulk fuel specialist.

I went to Fallujah, Iraq from March 2006 - September 2006 and left the wire at LEAST twice a week to fill IED holes on the roads and build SWA Hunt for grunts...I'm thinkin' us females CAN leave the wire. Now as far as patrolling with grunts for the sake of patrolling, no, females won't do that. Generally only Division Combat Engineers will go out with them and women can't be in the Division (CEB). I say generally, because my last deployment was a MEU and we had 1/5 with us, who ironically supported us while we did a mission in Djibouti, so you may work directly with them under some unlikely circumstances, but as I just said, it's really unlikely.

Women are allowed to be combat engineers in the Marine Corps. However they are limited to what units they can be put in. Division units, or those that serve in direct support of the infantry, do not accept women. I am pretty sure this is true of any construction/utilities MOS. You will be stuck in a Support or Air unit.
