Approximately 300 wooden toys, crafted by inmates assigned to the woodshop at the Elmwood Correctional Facility, were donated to the U.S. Marines Corps' Toys for Tots program on Friday.

The Marines were present to formally receive the toys from Chief of Correction Edward Flores in a brief ceremony at the Elmwood woodshop.

Some of the inmates who helped create the toys were in attendance.

Each year, the Department of Correction donates hundreds of wooden toys puzzles, cars, trains and doll cradles to Toys for Tots. More than 2,000 inmate-crafted toys have been donated by the Department of Correction to the Toys for Tots program since 2001.

Inmates assigned to the woodshop make the toys in between larger projects year-round. The toys are cut, sanded and painted or lacquered.

"The Department of Correction is pleased to again partner with the U.S. Marines in this outstanding effort to spread joy to the needy children in our community," Chief Flores said.
