JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A staff sergeant being awarded the Bronze Star next week was often under fire as he defused improvised explosive devices in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Bogart, a team leader with the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C.-based explosive ordnance disposal unit, will receive the Bronze Star with combat “V” on Oct. 12, according to an air station press release.

During a seven-month deployment in Iraq that ended in March, Bogart and his team responded to more than 174 EOD-related combat missions, defusing 65 IEDs and disposing of 11,000 pounds of unexploded ordnance.

“These feats were made even more impressive considering the fact that many of these missions were conducted under enemy fire and the constant threat of improvised explosive devices, rocket-propelled grenades, small-arms and indirect fires,” according to his award citation.

Maj. Gen. Robert Dickerson, Marine Corps Installations East commanding general, will present the medal to Bogart in a ceremony at the air station.
