Two Marines Killed In Crash Identified
Two Men Were Based At Camp Pendleton

SAN DIEGO - Military officials released the names Thursday of two Camp Pendleton-based Marines killed in a freeway accident in Otay Mesa last weekend.

Sgt. Edwin Somarriba, 24, and Cpl. David Yrure, 23, were among five people in a southbound Honda Civic that skidded out of control on Interstate 805, near state Route 905 shortly before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to USMC officials and the California Highway Patrol.

The sedan veered off the roadway at 85-90 mph, crashed and caught fire. The Marines died at the scene, and two of their three companions were severely injured, the CHP reported. The other suffered less serious trauma.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Both deceased servicemen served a combat deployment in Iraq.

Somarriba, who enlisted in June 2001, was an automotive mechanic assigned to the 3rd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

His personal awards include a Good Conduct Medal with gold star, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Yrure joined the Marines in November 2003. He was an automotive mechanic assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

Yrure's personal awards include a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Korean Defense Service Medal, Certificate of Commendation and Certificate of Appreciation.
