Va. — More than 300 Marines have received the Navy Unit Commendation for their service while attached to III Marine Expeditionary Force, according to the Marine Corps.

The award is the unit equivalent of the Silver Star.

On Monday, the Corps announced that the North Carolina-based Marines in Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare squadrons 2 and 3 would receive the award that was originally given to all of III MEF in July 2005.

The units were not included in the original award due to an administrative oversight, a Navy official said.

The citation will go to the units, which will notify the affected members, who will get to wear the citation ribbon, the official said. Unit citations do not affect promotion points.

The award was given for service between Sept. 11, 2001, and May 31, 2003, according to a recent Marine Corps Administrative Message (MARADMIN).

During that time, III MEF and Marine Corps Bases, Japan, “Consistently demonstrated unparalleled success in providing direct support to the operating forces of the United States Navy,” according to the commendation, signed by then-Navy Secretary Gordon England.
