Injured Marine To Receive Reconstructive Surgeries
BY THE MORNING NEWS

ROGERS -- Aaron Mankin, a Marine corporal wounded in 2005 while serving in Iraq and a Rogers High School graduate, will undergo the second stage of major facial reconstructive surgery Tuesday at the University of California-Los Angeles.

Mankin was interviewed this week by Bob Woodruff of ABC News in a story about Operation Mend, the program which is sponsoring Mankin is having surgery, according to Mankin's father Steve, of Rogers. The segments are scheduled to begin airing Monday on "World News Tonight," Steve Mankin said.

Aaron Mankin's transport vehicle hit a mine and he was severely burned when emergency equipment apparently malfunctioned. Fire control devices didn't go off and a rear ramp wouldn't open. Marines were able to open a side door.

Aaron is now married to Marine Lance Cpl. Diana Mankin, and they have an 8-month-old daughter, Maddie.

Operation Mend is a collaborative program between UCLA Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. The program provides reconstructive plastic surgery to military personnel wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a news release from UCLA.

Mankin, 25, is the first to participate in the program.

The Katz Family Foundation is supporting all noncovered costs, including travel and housing, for soldiers and their families during treatment.
