For their work in Iraq, Navy Petty Officers 3rd Class Royce A. Ross and John E. Scott were honored by the Marines last week and presented the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device.
Ross, a 24-year-old who works at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, deployed with the Mobile Assault Platoon 3, Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment from August 2006 to February.
"The citation recognizes his actions in saving an Iraqi child who had fallen from a three-story building in Al Karmah and subsequently getting her safely to medical facilities," according to a press release.
Ross was also cited for helping treat Marines after a roadside bomb detonated on their vehicle. Ross was injured in the blast, too. Scott deployed from July to December 2006 with the 2nd Platoon, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment.
He "participated in more than 150 combat patrols and other counterinsurgency missions in and around the cities of Rawah, Anah and Reyanah," according to a press release.
Scott, a 24-year-old who also works at the Portsmouth hospital, was cited for, on multiple occasions, treating Marines, Iraqi Security Forces and Iraqi civilians.
"The achievement medal is designated as an award for junior personnel," according to the Navy. "The combat distinguishing device, or valor device, is for specific heroic acts during or supporting direct combat with the enemy. The award must be personally recommended by a superior and is not an automatic decoration or upgrade."
