To protect our country, we`ll need a constant influx of soldiers.

The Marines are giving North Dakota a taste of recruitment training in Bismarck at Family Night.

Drill instructors from San Diego are working with those who have enlisted.

The goal is for the new Marines and their families to get a better idea of what to expect and to show them they can accomplish the challenging tasks ahead.

Gunnery Sergeant Al Fowler says about 50 to 60 young men and women from Central and Western North Dakota usually enlist in the Marines each year.

"The purpose of this event is to give the young men that are waiting to go to recruit training a little taste of what boot camp`s all about," said Fowler. The types of stress and pressure that they`ll be underneath and to show that the drill instructors have a human side to them."

Enlistees are preparing for three phases of training.

"Serving our country is a big thing because I believe we have one of the best countries and we should defend it," said Spencer Nice of Williston. "And then my dad was in the Army and I always wanted to be in the military. I always had that sense of pride and I wanted to be just like him."

The first phase of training will be in San Diego.
