Lance corporals and corporals who want to lat-move into jobs that still have cutting scores for promotion now can move up in their job field even before they finish training. So if a Marine moves from a job field with a high cutting score into one with a lower cutting score, it’s a good bet that he’ll be promoted as soon as he signals his intention to lat-move.

Here are the lowest average cutting scores, based on August 2006 to August of this year, making these the job fields that offer the best chances for promotion after a lat-move.

Bolded MOSs offer selective re-enlistment bonuses to Marines who lat-move into those fields:

Eleven military occupational specialties, which used to require you to be a sergeant to join, are now “entry-level” MOSs. So if you’re a lance corporal who makes a lateral move into one of these jobs, you will be promoted based on time in grade, not on cutting score.

The job fields that are now entry level are:

0143 Career retention specialist

0211 Counterintelligence/HUMINT specialist

0241 Imagery analysis specialist

0689 Information assurance technician

2336 Explosive ordnance disposal technician

2834 Satellite communications technician

3044 Contract specialist

3441 Nonappropriated funds audit technician

4133 Morale, welfare, recreation specialist

4429 Legal services reporter

5821 Criminal investigator (CID) agent
