Runners in the Oct. 28 Marine Corps Marathon will have to travel one less mile to “beat the bridge.”

Construction on Rock Creek Parkway forced organizers to alter this year’s course, meaning runners must travel 19 miles to reach the 14th Street Bridge by 1:15 p.m. — when the span reopens to vehicle traffic — instead of the 20 miles they had to run in the past, marathon spokeswoman Beth Johnson said.

The starting line will be in Arlington, Va., with changes starting once runners cross the Key Bridge heading into Georgetown. Runners will take a left turn on Canal Road after crossing the bridge and head up a hill on Foxhall Road toward Georgetown University’s campus, Johnson said.

The marathoners will descend from the campus on Reservoir Road back toward the Key Bridge, then run under the bridge along the Whitehurst Freeway, according to a marathon news release.

The course will weave through Crystal City and Rosslyn, Va., after crossing the 14th Street Bridge and, per tradition, the race will end at the Marine Corps War Memorial.

This is the first time major changes have been made to the course in two years, Johnson said.

“The course is tweaked every year, and we feel these changes will provide fresh aspects of the course for runners,” she said.
