Bedford trainer puts some muscle on Marine recruits

Bedford personal trainer Suzy Santay recently spent a long weekend doing her part to strengthen the military.

Using a heavy metal exercise bar and her years of experience whipping people into shape, Santay showed 90 future officers from the summer prep Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program a thing or two about fitness.

She was invited to lead an endurance session with some of the country's most fit and finest recruits during the IDEA world fitness conference, held last month in San Diego.

Part of her mission was to promote Body Bar, a weighted exercise bar, a product used with a commercial exercise regimen sold online and through some fitness clubs.

"It was a thrill for me, being invited to do a session for the toughest group in the country," Santay said of her experience. "My goal was to get them in shape to kick enemy butt."

One of her fitness recruits, Maj. Aaron Shelley, a Naval Academy MECEP Prep executive officer, said the mini boot camp experience was something new.

"The alternative fitness session with Suzy was very challenging and unlike any of the previous physical training we'd experienced with our MECEP Prep Marines," Shelley said.

"Suzy definitely worked out our muscles in new ways. Although we pride ourselves on being tough and in top physical condition, we were pretty humbled," Shelley said.

Santay's invitation came from prep summer program director Lt. Col Michael Moffett, of Concord.

When he's not in California leading new recruits through the rigors of officer training, he's heading the department of sports management at New Hampshire Technical Institute.

He said the New Hampshire advantage for Marines in training is that both Plymouth State University and NHTI offer MECEP's Education/Physical Training program for college credit - which helps Marines get through school a little faster so they can get on with their military careers.

"We have an extremely fit group of Marines in our program who will be going on to universities this fall and then Officer Candidate School next summer," Moffett said. "We're always looking for ways to challenge these people and Suzy's session fit the bill."
