Local Marine dies in combat

CAMP PENDLETON -- A 21-year-old Marine based at Camp Pendleton died Saturday in Iraq, military officials announced Monday.

Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer of East Northport, N.Y., died in combat in the Anbar province, according to a statement from Camp Pendleton. He was a combat engineer with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Unit. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

He is one of at least 331 North County-based Marines to have died in the Iraq war. At least 3,631 U.S. service members have died in the war as of Monday, according to the Pentagon.


Scherer joined the Marine Corps in February of 2004 and had earned a number of medals in his three years in the service, including: the Sea Service Deployment ribbon, the Global War on Terrorism Service medal, the National Defense Service medal, the Good Conduct medal and the Armed Forces Reserve medal.
