A group of students are honing their math skills by preparing a treat for local troops as a Fourth of July project.

Area high school students attending the Upward Bound Residential Academic Camp at Arizona Western College are making 35 dozen cookies for the single Marines at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, according to program director Terry Shove.

"I was looking for a project where the kids got to quadruple a cookie recipe for a fraction project. And my culinary arts teacher thought maybe we should actually make the cookies instead of just pretend."

The cookies, along with thank-you cards, will be delivered to the Marines next week.

Upward Bound is a federal grant program targeted to help low-income and English-learning students graduate from high school and attend college.

Fifty-one students from schools throughout Yuma and La Paz counties are attending the camp at AWC this summer.
