Trooper, Marine Corps captain to be honored posthumously

Middletown – The US Marine Corps Captain and New York State Trooper John McKenna IV will posthumously receive the Silver Star for heroic actions demonstrated while serving as rifle platoon commander in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was killed on August 16, 2006.

McKenna was on a patrol with his rifle platoon when they came under heavy enemy fire. When he saw one of his Marines being struck by small arms fire, McKenna left a covered position and went to his aid. While providing aid, McKenna was struck and killed by small arms fire.

The award will be presented on Saturday at the Garrison at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn at 6 p.m. McKenna’s father, John McKenna, his mother, Karen, and his sister, Allison, will receive the award.

McKenna was mobilized on December 1, 2005 and deployed to Fallujah, Iraq when he served as third platoon commander for Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, located in Londonderry, NH.

McKenna was also a New York State Trooper at Troop F, Zone 3 in Kingston.

On May 29, 2007, McKenna received an award for his heroism presented by the Ulster County Chiefs of Police Association at the association’s annual awards dinner.
