Private arrested on desertion warrant

A 21-year-old private accused of deserting was arrested Tuesday in Florida and was released to Marine officials Wednesday, said a spokesman for the Lee County, Fla., sheriff’s department.
Deputies arrested Pvt. Michael Laferriere at a trailer in North Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday on a federal fugitive warrant, said sheriff’s department spokesman Tony Schall.
The Marine Corps classified Laferriere as a deserter 30 days after he left his post at Marine Corps Engineer School in Courthouse Bay, N.C., without authorization, 1st Lt. Craig Thomas, a Camp Lejeune, N.C., spokesman, wrote in an e-mail response to questions. It was unclear as of Wednesday afternoon when Laferriere left his post.
