If youve ever had to deal with any of this **** or have your own stories of people who wanna give you crap for trying to do something with your life please share.

Mom: Tells me I am ruining my life, sends me emails about enlisted men who have gotten ptsd or had limbs amputated, every single time I am tired or forget to pick something up "How are you going to survive in the Marine Corps if you cant..." Asks me to concider joining the canadian army.
Dad: You are doing more harm to America joining up, tells me he is not proud of me, tries to bribe me with cash and a car if I delay joining up.
Friends: Not as negative, just pretty dumb: "I could be a Marine, Im pretty good at pushups and stuff, but I wouldent want to give up smokeing pot."

Hey a fellow canuk! As for the family problems.. I'd say I have it easy. My mom supports me, don't know where my dad is nor do I care, and friends.. well I have a couple left that think it's cool.

You had your own good reasons to sign the papers, and your decision was final. Use their doubt as a source of motivation, dream of the day when (if) you graduate recruit training and return home as a Marine. They (and you) will be proud of what you will accomplish, not just in boot camp, or in your time in the Marine Corps, but throughout your entire life thereafterword. You are NOT the first person whose family was upset after they joined the Marine Corps. Good luck.

My own girlfriend tells me that if I dont become a Marine we'll have a great time at home and while its tempting id rather be a US Marine haha. Just ignore them and hold your head up high and when you see them later on in life being nasty you can laugh at them when you're a Marine.

Especially when she sees that the Corps has gotten you to do things that she has tried ALLLLLLLLL of your life but never did. You'll stand straighter, you'll be more focused, you'll be more polite (when need be - rest of the time is balls to the wall) - you'll say Ma'am and Sir to EVERYBODY.

Don't sweat it so much and try not to take the bait when they throw negative $h!t your way.

Everytime you walk out the door and go to the store or go where you want when you want, tell them this. You can do these things, these freedom things because of the history of the U.S Military. Ever since 1775 the Military branches of the USA have gone into combat for your freedoms. Nobody wants to go to War and the ones that don't want to go to war are the Military Branches of the Services, but when called to duty they will do their duty as it has shown in past history. Our freedoms are here today because of past military men and women fighten for them, if not for them we would be talking or controled by a differant goverment meaning country of speech. Two times the Germans tried to take over the world and the USA is the one that pretty much stopped them. We would be still ruled by Britsh rule if it was not for our for fathers getting our freedoms from them, but we had to fight them for it. Which is were the U.S Marines were Born Nov. 10 1775. Freedom is not Free and you have to fight for it and protect it. Being in the Military is a sense of duty that can't be explained by words. Once you earn the title Marine you will understand this. People put down the military and say things, but they forget how they got their freedoms that each day we all take as right. It was only gotten for us because of the military going into harms way and fighting dieing and killing on battle fields all over the world. Freedom is not Free, there is a price and it is a high price.

Wow. There have been lots of these types of threads recently.

Personally most of the insults and stuff don't bother me. I haven't enlisted yet (too young) but I need to exert a little more self control when I hear the "You have amazing grades. You can do so much more with your life..."

My parents are pretty supportive because they know it's what I really want to do. People at school however... thats a different story. Kids call me stupid and tell me I'm just going over there to die for nothing. Even my freaking guidance counselor is telling me it's a mistake and that I should join the Coast Guard instead. I even have a friend whos joining the National Guard and he tries to convince me that the Army is better than the Marines and that the training is much harder.

The freaking teachers at my school are biased. One of them tried to cram her hippie ideals down the student's throat. When my recruiters attended the career fair at my school, that same hippie teacher came out and began protesting, saying the military is the reason why there are wars. She also demanded that the recruiters show their "permit" to be able to inform prospects about the Marine Corps. Where do these kind of people come from? How can they be so brainless?

sigh----------Zack, the USA is made up of people that enjoy the right to grip and complain, and they do! They know that we are the reason they have that right, but they choose to complain about it! Marines are unique and Proud! The people that grip are many also, as well as unique! They are the first ones to yell for the Marines' help when the crap hits the fan! They are just fortunate enough that,THANK GOD, they haven't seen the reality of war, nor do they know the reason for war. We don't start wars,-----we finish them!

Besides the general discouragement from my parents, I have a specific story in my pyschology class.

My teacher (Harvard-educated, also a Ralph Lauren model) always thought I was some sort of honors-student... You know, a lot of class participation, thoughtful essays, grades to match, etc. He taught other members of my family, now all Ivy League educated...

But then one day he asks me to stay after school to edit a letter I was writing to a professor at Cornell University about material she had written which we were studying in class. Aparently he liked my contradictory response in an essay and wanted me to forward my views to this professor. So, after we send it, he asks me where I want to attend university, and that's where the trouble started. See, he's my favorite teacher I've ever had in my life.

After informing him that I planned to enlist, he got all upset and we talked for about an hour on the subject. He couldn't comprehend that I had fairly mediocre grades in all my classes except his, and that I didn't desire going to college like 99% of the kids at my school. Well, at least not yet. Maybe after my second chance at life in the Marine Corps.

Anyway, the thing I noticed is that he wasn't angry, just very concerned. Everyone else was angry at me, but only he showed any sign of actually caring about me. That was touching, truthfully. No anti-Americanism, military-bashing, unintelligble ramblings, etc. I really hope I can grow up to be someone like him. He and my recruiter are my two biggest role-models at the moment. Just an observation, both are African-American. I don't even know (in a friend sort of way) other blacks besides them. Interesting.

Hey Books...imagine how it feels when you graduate with a degree in Political Science and you have to deal with the teachers who tried to indoctrinate you with a ton of BS for 5 years. I am being told that I wasted a lot of money by getting a degree...I say BS...it'll be here when I am finished with my committment no matter how long it will be. I'm pretty sure they don't expire...:)

However, like you said you do have those people who truly care...I've never found this from teachers...but from co-workers, the good 'ol blue collar union types. My second mom's and dad's I've worked with for years. They'll give you hell and most haven't served, but there's a different...they genuinely care. Just feel lucky to have these people.

Oh, don't get me wrong, most of my teachers are die-hard anti-Americans. We get the best of those in the country. My Spanish teacher suggested that we kill President Bush... Of course she said it in Spanish so that makes it okay I guess. When she asked me what "Green Peace" was, and she wanted me to use vocabulary words, I told her it was a terrorist organization.

That would get an A- in my class...the minus only if you did it in Spanish...:)

It's funny, my brother was the only one in his platoon with a Diploma, and he was the youngest as well, graduated as the platoon honor man.
Not to mention, that his Airborne School Platoon Sergeant is a Marine and I hear how he wants to be just like him.

I think any of the Viet Nam Marines will agree to this, you poolees think you catch crap, you should have been around in the 60's and early 70's when you volunteered in the Corps! Now that was a test of nerves and self control! I wish that, what you guys say has happened to you, was all that happened to me! But I endured and overcame! I am a Marine and no one can take that away from me, as long as I live! :marine:

Been there. It weren't too long ago, after a couple of recruiters came to my school, these people started putting signs and flyers up about how recruiters lie, and how the military is just a death sentence, sh*t like that. Then they started passing out these forms so that recruiters couldn't even talk to them without parents consent and stuff like that. All a bunch of BS but really p*ssed me and a some other guys who are joining. So we went around and took some of them down and put up old recruitment posters from WWII that we printed off the internet :bunny:. Needless to say that we made our point.

Sir Ive heard some bad things about back then. And is it me or has this type of thread poped up about once a month or so?

And personally the only crap I have gotten was some kids joking around or what ever saying I was going to die, but now that they have seen my determintation they're thinking of the military in general, and strong posibility of the Corps, my dad may be retired but he can still help the recruiters with strong influences :D but now ive been told by my g/f that the only thing she doesnt like is the part about being seperated for long periods of time but shes perfectly fine with everything else. :flag:

I already know half of them aren't serious, that they're doing it just to fit in, but then the other half probably will go through with it, :) the more the merrier:beer:!

Yea but the Halo 2/Manhunt partys help alot with it. Everyone comes over and while we kill each other mom or dad will sit there and talk about the Corps and teach people new things about the military in general so it helps in our community for those who are interested.

ElDiablo
05-30-07, 09:03 AM
True, and when we wear tee-shirts that say Marines or something along those lines, people come up and ask what it is, and then they start looking into it, and then they're hooked too, same thing when they see us on this site, they're like, "What's a leatherneck?", then we explain it and they go look into it. Yeah, and like you said, those manhunt parties get people interested too. Your parents sit there and talk about the Corps and stuff and answer questions, and your house is filled with Marine Corps items. And I agree, it does help the community. Especially seeing as everyone who wants to join are all friends, it kinda pushes us all to do a little more, little bit of competition never hurt, right? :)
