A famous photo of a World War II Marine will not be on the front of an album fearing 26 Army songs.

Altissimo! Recordings, which produces recordings of military music, has decided it is better to have an album design with 20 patches from Army units than an alternative that featured a photo of Marine Pfc. Paul E. Ison taken in 1945 on Okinawa.

The Ison photo was taken during a famous battle in which 125 Marines died in about eight hours. The National Archives has a copy of the photo, and it has been used on the cover of books and brochures. It was the cover photo of a 1995 issue of Leatherneck magazine, an official Marine Corps publication.

In February, the record company gave customers two choices for the cover of its new album of songs from the U.S. Army Chorus. One featured the photo of Ison and the second included unit patches.

Company president Al McCree said he got the Marine photo from the U.S. Army Band and was unaware a Marine was about to be put on the cover of an album of Army songs.

The album, now on sale at the Altissimo Web site, www.militarymusic.com/uses the cover of the patches instead. The music includes songs ranging from standards like Army Song, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, Yankee Doodle and the Star-Spangled Banner to songs written for specific units, such as the Iron Soldier March of the 1st Armored Division, the Dogfaced Soldier Song of the 3rd Infantry Division, the Big Red One song of the 1st Infantry Division and Climb to Glory of the 10th Mountain Division.
