Second Marine reservist call-up planned

By: North County Times -

A second call-up of another 1,800 Marine reservists will take place later this summer, according to a published report in the Marine Corps Times confirmed by service officials in Washington.

The upcoming activation of troops from the Marine Corps' Individual Ready Reserve forces will result in about 1,200 of those who get the call being sent to Iraq sometime next year.

In March, the Marine Corps issued a similar call for 1,800 of the reservists and said about 1,200 from that group are expected to be sent to Iraq later this year.

One of the approximately 350 reservists in California who got the March letter was Capt. Duncan Duane Hunter, son of U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon and a candidate for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.

Capt. Hunter asked and the Marine Corps granted his request that he go right away and he is now at North Carolina's Camp Lejeune for training before shipping out to Iraq.

The younger Hunter made that request in hopes he will be back in the U.S. by late fall to resume his campaign for the congressional seat his father now holds. The older Hunter announced in November that he would not seek re-election to the 52nd Congressional District that includes representation of the Poway and Ramona areas.
