The Corps’ top enlisted spot was passed to Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent in a post-and-relief ceremony held at Marine Barracks Washington on April 25.
Kent, who comes to Marine Corps headquarters from Camp Pendleton, Calif., where he served as the senior enlisted leader for I Marine Expeditionary Force, replaces the 15th sergeant major of the Marine Corps, Sgt. Maj. John Estrada, who will retire in the coming months after 34 years in the Corps.
“I think the next few years [for the Corps] are going to be exciting,” Estrada said during an April 23 interview. “I would love to be a part of it, but all good things come to an end.”
During the ceremony, Kent said he is looking forward “to being a combat multiplier for Marines and their families by getting out and hearing what their issues are and making recommendations to our commandant,” according to an April 26 Marine Corps release.
Commandant Gen. James Conway announced Kent as Estrada’s successor in January.
Estrada, who has held the position since June 2003, is slated to retire in June, according to headquarters officials.
