Sulphur Springs Marine honored for courage under fire

Apr. 24, 2007 - Marine Staff Sgt. Trace M. Bolding, a 1993 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School, was awarded the Purple Heart on Monday for action during his first tour of duty in Ar-Ramadi, Iraq.
He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on Feb. 12, 2006.
It was the second citation for courage under fire Bolding earned during the tour of duty, having received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal on June 13 of 2006.
He earned the Achievement Medal while he was a platoon sergeant on Oct. 18, 2005, when he and his Marines came under sniper fire while providing security for a civil affairs group mission at an Ar-Ramadi hospital.
"While moving into position on the roof, an enemy sniper engaged Staff Sergeant Bolding and his Marines," the Achievement Medal citation states. "He ordered the Marines to seek cover and then moved, under enemy sniper fire, to located the insurgent's position. Upon locating the sniper, he ordered the Marines to engage, causing the insurgent to flee to a nearby vehicle."
Bolding was able to help another unit track the sniper's vehicle got his fellow Marines off the rooftop without injury.
"Through his actions under fire, he prevented an enemy interference with the civil affairs group's mission," the citation states. "Staff Sergeant Bolding's initiative, courage and devotion to duty reflected credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service."
Bolding, the son of Charles and Marilyn Bolding of Sulphur Springs, deploys again for Ar-Ramadi, Iraq, on April 26 for a second tour of duty.
