HAVELOCK — In this military town where almost everyone knows someone who has been deployed to Iraq, Havelock High School students and staff members are doing their part to help.

Rams for Troops is the school’s effort to send care packages to a group of Marines deployed to Iraq.

“It’s something we can do here at Havelock High to offer our support,” said John McLeod, science teacher and faculty advisor for the student council.

McLeod said students and teachers are collecting individually packaged snacks such as breakfast bars and candy, entertainment items such as playing cards and batteries for electronics, and personal items such as deodorant, baby wipes and sunscreen.

McLeod said another effort is called Ten for Troops, which involves cash donations of $10 to pay for shipping of the packages.

He said the student council has set aside some money for the effort, and that donations from outside the school are also welcome.

“We won’t turn anything away,” he said. “If we have anything left over, we’ll donate those to an organization like the USO that supports the troops.”

He said each package would also contain a special item — a picture of students holding a thank you banner.

“It will give them a touch of home,” McLeod said.

While part of the effort is aimed at deployed Marines, another part of Rams for Troops is to help students whose parents are deployed. Assistant Principal Fran Sprankle said little mementos are given to the students.

“It’s just something to say ‘we’re thinking of you,’” she said.

Donations are being accepted until April 27, when McLeod said students would begin preparing the packages for shipping.

Donations can be dropped off at the school’s main office or mailed Havelock High at 101 Webb Blvd., Havelock, NC 28532.
