The next sergeant major of the Marine Corps will head to his new assignment in the Pentagon after turning over I Marine Expeditionary Force’s top enlisted spot this coming Monday during a ceremony at Camp Pendleton, Calif., according to a Marine Corps release.

Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent was tapped earlier this year by Commandant Gen. James Conway to succeed Sgt. Maj. John Estrada as the Corps’ senior enlisted Marine.

Kent’s spot as enlisted adviser to Lt. Gen. Jim Mattis, I MEF’s commanding general, will be passed to Sgt. Maj. Dennis Reed during the ceremony, the release said.

Estrada said in January that he plans to retire after Kent takes over, probably “sometime this summer.”

In the meantime, “We’re going to spend some time together for a good turnover,” Estrada said.
