Soldier from Appomattox is glad to be home from Iraq
WDBJ 7 Roanoke

Some members of the Virginia Army National Guard made it home this week. The 2nd Battalion 224th Aviation unit spent more than a year in Iraq, providing air support for Marines in the Al Anbar province.

They got a rousing homecoming during their return to their home base in Sandston yesterday afternoon.

One member of that unit hails from Appomattox and he works in Lynchburg as a police officer. But for now, Michael Gregory just looks forward to becoming a regular citizen again.

Gregory had just joined the Lynchburg police department when 9/11 convinced him he needed to step up and do his part for his country. Now he's back home, much to the relief of his family, friends and neighbors.

Gregory says while he's glad to be home, he's also mindful of the troops still serving and the two soldiers with his outfit who were killed in Iraq.

He also feels American troops there are doing a lot of good.
