The Super Bowl can fetch millions of dollars from advertising execs trying to reach fans, but association with the big game didn’t boost a USO fundraiser beyond four figures.

Operation Touchdown II challenged fans of the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears to be the first side to raise $100,000 for United Service Organizations. The nonprofit group supports troops and their families through numerous activities.

After the campaign ended Sunday, the USO had collected $4,540 from 107 donors, spokeswoman Tiane Harrison said.

Colts fans sent $2,930, and $1,610 came from Bears diehards.

While donations were far short of the $100,000 goal, Harrison said the USO was, as always, “just grateful for the support of the American people.”

Army Reserve Maj. David Seiter, a Colts fan, and his unit’s spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Paula Jones, announced the challenge Jan. 30.
