Super Bowl rivalry benefits USO

NFL fans rooting for their favorite team to win Sunday’s Super Bowl have another challenge to meet — raise $100,000 before their rivals can.

Operation Touchdown II is a United Service Organizations fundraising campaign tied to the National Football League’s championship game. This year’s Super Bowl pits the Chicago Bears against the Indianapolis Colts.

Results will be announced Monday after the big game.

As of Wednesday, Colts fans were ahead by a large margin — $2,020 compared to $735 sent by Bears fans, according to the USO’s dedicated Web site, www.uso.org/superbowl. The matchup began Saturday.

Operation Touchdown II wouldn’t have happened without Army Reserve Maj. David Seiter.

The avid Colts fan got NFL sponsorship of an American football clinic for Iraqi children while he was deployed in 2003.

Besides spurring his favorite team to help, Seiter also got the New Orleans Saints involved by ribbing his then-supervisor, Army Col. Ted Cox, who has since retired.

With the Colts’ success this season, Seiter found a Bears fan to challenge for charity — his unit’s public affairs officer, Lt. Col. Paula Jones.

Donations can be made online using Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover credit cards at www.uso.org/superbowl. There is a $5 minimum for online donations.

Donations are also accepted by phone at (800) 876-7469.

Checks payable to the USO can be mailed to USO World Headquarters, Department WS, P.O. Box 96860, Washington, DC 20090-6860. Don’t forget to note to which team the donation should be credited.

Donations may be eligible for matching by a donor’s employer, but the company’s gift form must be included with the donation.
