FROM STAFF REPORTS
Jan 10, 2007, 7:27 pm

Approximately 110 Yuma Marines from Marine Attack Squadron 214 and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13 are deploying today.

The Marines will be attached to the Essex Amphibious Ready Group in support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit based out of Okinawa, Japan.

The deployment is scheduled to last seven months.

About 40 Yuma Marines from Marine Attack Squadron 214 have already been deployed to join the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The first group of 20 Marines left on Saturday morning. A second group of 20 Marines, and the eight Harrier jets, deployed on Sunday.

According to the Marine Corps Web site, the 31st MEU is one of seven such combined-arms, Marine air-ground task forces and is the only one that is permanently forward-deployed.

Amphibious in nature and designed for joint operations, MEU's are capable of performing numerous ship-to-shore missions, crisis responses and humanitarian assistance operations.
