Riding for Marines overseas

November 24, 2006

It was a cold November morning at Jake's Outpost on U.S. 51.

Members of the Wolf Pack Riding Club gathered to escort a truckload of supplies for the troops to Nashville.

"I thought because of the weather I'd get four or five people, but when 15 people showed up, I was just thrilled," said Nola Beckum, who organized the drive for the Millington and Tipton County area.

Once the supplies arrive in Nashville, the Tennessee Marine Family will pack boxes and get them ready for shipping to the troops.

Enough items for 300 boxes were collected from individuals as well as from local businesses in Millington and Tipton County.

"It's hard to put into words what this package drive means to me," said Beckum, who is a proud Marine mother. "However many boxes were filled meant that many more would have something for the holidays and wouldn't have to go without."

Beckum plans on another package drive in three or four months.

Items that can be sent to the troops include foot powder, nonpork vienna sausages, lip balm, granola bars, tea bags, sunflower seeds and hard candy.

For drop off or other information call Beckum at 475-4294.
