2 Kaneohe Marines Killed In Separate Operations

HONOLULU -- Two Kaneohe-based Marines were killed on Wednesday in fighting in Iraq, according to officials from Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Pvt. 1st Class Daniel B. Chaires, 20, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Pvt. 1st Class Donald S. Brown, 19, of Succassunna, N.J., died in separate operations.

Both were in Anbar province at the time.

Chaires and Brown were riflemen assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force.

The Marines both joined the corps in Sept. 2005. They deployed to Iraq last month.

The two were awarded the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Both men were going to be promoted to lance corporal next week.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii has lost six Marines so far this month.
