"Families Mourn The Loss Of Mid-State Marines"

Two mid-state marines are among the US troops killed in Iraq in what's turned out to be one of the deadliest months of the war. Military officials say Richard Buerstetta of Franklin and Tyler Overstreet of Gallatin were killed in al Anbar province on Sunday. Buerstetta's family was not ready to comment and asked for privacy during this difficult time. Overstreet's family talked with News 2 about the young man who leaves behind a baby, born only weeks ago, that he never got to meet.

Tyler Overstreet was a 2004 graduate of Gallatin High School, and wanted to serve his country just like his grandfather did. Right out of high school, he......joined the reserves, and his unit has still not been deployed. But Tyler jumped at the chance to leave early for Iraq with another unit.

His aunt, Lee Ann Prior, said, “He died doing what he believed in. He loved being a marine. He wanted to do it for all of us, and protect us. He didn't have to go, he volunteered.”

Wednesday, Tyler was remembered at Gallatin High School by friends, faculty, and family members. Two of Tyler’s sisters and his cousin still attend Gallatin High School. They want everybody to know how proud, and how serious he was about serving his country.

“Tyler was inspirational; he always was goodabout accomplishing all of the goals he set for himself,” said sister Dimitria Mertens.

“We didn't want him to go, but we didn't want to crush his dream. It seems hard to believe he's gone, but we'll never forget him. We miss him, we love him,” said his cousin Kayley Prock.

Tyler never did get the chance to meet his son, Ashton Allen Overstreet, born just a few days after he deployed to Iraq. A marine died, but so did a new father, and a family member. That can never be replaced.

The Tennessee department of veteran’s affairs says 66 Tennessee servicemen have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001.The death toll in Iraq for US troops also eclipsed a new milestone. 2,801 men and women have lost their lives in the war.
