Marines help wounded, injured fix pay problems

ARLINGTON, Va. — Wounded and injured Marines sent from downrange and elsewhere overseas to stateside hospitals can now go to local Marine units for pay and entitlement issues, according to the Marine Corps.
Under new assignment procedures outlined in an Aug. 11 administrative message, recuperating Marines can be transferred to the local units after being stable for 30 days, Maj. Craig Price said.
The change affects about 1,000 Marines who are now hospitalized, said Price, branch head of Manpower Management Integration and Administration.
In April, the Marines made a change to procedures under which wounded Marines were temporarily assigned to hospitals but still permanently assigned to their units so they could draw a per diem for housing, Price said. That made it difficult for wounded Marines to continue to receive pay and benefits because their units were still in Iraq or other locations, he said.
Now, hospitalized Marines will be able to go to local Marine units for pay and entitlement problems, and the Marine Corps will decide whether to give wounded Marines a per diem on a case-by-case basis, Price said.
