MASON CITY — Lt. Col. Daniel Ermer, a native of Rockwell, has received the Bronze Star medal for service in Iraq.

An 18-year veteran of the Marines, Ermer was stationed in Iraq from February 2005 to February 2006.

Ermer is a member of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing Support Group. His unit was active throughout Iraq including several areas in and around Fallujah

“We did a lot of construction,” said Ermer of the unit in which he served as an engineering staff officer.

According to documentation with the award, Ermer’s unit was involved in 334 engineer priority projects with a value of more than $300 million.

The Bronze Star medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the military of the United States distinguishes himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service.

Ermer has been stateside since February and is now in the process of preparing to return to Iraq sometime in September.

A 1983 graduate of Newman Catholic High School in Mason City, Ermer trained with the ROTC while attending Iowa State University.

He is the son of Robert and Marilyn Ermer of Rockwell.
