Navy Corpsmen: A Marine's Best Friend
From Navy News Service

Jul 9 2006
by MC1(SCW/SS) James Pinsky
The corpsmen warned me the air would be thin up there, but I didn’t notice. This was my first combat patrol and like a child trapped in the dark, I was petrified.

The shoestring-narrow roads around the 6,000-foot mountains of Torkhem, Afghanistan make the battle-hardened Marines I was embedded with something the Taliban doesn’t – nervous.

The drivers, behaving more like tightrope walkers than desert warriors, eased their Humvees along the trails with one eye on the path and the other pragmatically scanning the limitless caves and nomad populations for the enemy.

I didn’t move – not a millimeter – while we climbed along paths so narrow that I honestly thought if I breathed too hard I’d tip us over the side, plummeting us more than a mile down to certain death.

I didn’t breathe. I didn’t blink. I waited for Taliban to ambush us from behind every rock, and there were a lot of rocks.

HN “Doc” Joseph Nededog, noticed my white knuckles.

“You know, I’ve been waiting for months for one of those goats to fall off the side of these mountains,” Nededog quipped. “They never do,” he said with a grin. I smiled, and finally breathed.

That's what “Docs” do. They make everyone comfortable, a when you’re a corpsman for Marines in the heart of insurgent country, helping a photojournalist keep his lunch down and his lungs working is an easy day.

Nededog has seen worse.

After all, it wasn’t the enemy that made these combat veterans slow their pace, and rightfully so. It was Afghanistan itself, not the besieged Taliban, that claimed 3rd Platoon’s first soul in a Humvee rollover less than a month before this patrol.

Doc Nededog rolled that day too; still, he managed to treat his turret gunner who lay motionless, crushed between his weapon and the callous Afghanistan desert floor. It wasn’t enough. Third Platoon lost a Marine that day. Losing any Marine is terrible, but to these Marines, all Marines, the thought of losing a corpsman was unimaginable.

That’s how much Marines love their corpsmen.

“We’re a brotherhood out here. To lose a corpsman would be a huge blow,” said Marine SSgt. Matthew Morse, 3rd Platoon Commander, “maybe more than losing a Marine, because our corpsmen are our security blankets.”

And when you’re actively seeking to eradicate some of the world’s most dangerous guerrilla warfare fighters, you bring one hell of a security blanket.

“Corpsmen have the trauma training to react to any situation,” said Morse. “The corpsman who was in the vehicle that rolled and killed one Marine had enough awareness to recover from his injuries and still treat the Marine.”

And that’s what Marines expect corpsmen to do because history says they will. No single rating in the Navy is more decorated for valor than the hospital corpsman. The Marines don’t wonder if he will save their lives. They just wonder when.

“Being a Marine is hard enough, and we are their corpsmen,” said HMC Claude English, 1/3 Marines battalion medical chief. “We’re the ones who get them home to mom and dad. If they get hurt they come to you, and that’s why they cherish you.”

Rollovers are the least of Doc Nededog’s worries today. Just a few miles away from their convoy, black smoke billowed into the desert sky. Too far away to harm these Marines, it garnered no more than a passing glance. The sights and sounds of war don’t impress them any more.

But the smells do.

The burning trash and raw sewage odors linger like cheap perfume, giving some areas of Afghanistan an unforgettable stench.

“The smell always reminds me that something isn’t right here,” said Nededog.

Hours later, back at Firebase Torkhem, officially called Forward Operating Base (FOB) Torkhem, the Marines found out that the smoke, caused by a fuel truck explosion from an improvised explosive device (IED), may have been meant for them.

“The Taliban know we’re here helping the Afghan border police,” said Morse. “It could have been ugly, but the border police did their job. They found the bomb in enough time to get everyone away. Nobody was hurt, not even the driver.”

Just a year ago, according to the international police mentors, that bomb would have made it through to its destination. The training is working.

And that was why Doc Nededog and his Marines climb and drive Afghanistan’s mountains and cross its deserts. They play big brother to the developing Afghan border police, helping them stand on their own. The idea being few bullies would pick a fight with a little brother with such a ferocious sibling. So far the plan worked, making 3rd platoon’s corpsmen – combat-wise – very bored.

Thank you for the wonderful article about today's Doc's. We have just grown to expect courage from our Marines so Corpsmen have to live up to that reputation if they want to serve with the best. Today's Doc's are better trained and smarter then we were, so they can do more to help their Marines. We just could never look a fellow Corpsmen or Marine in the eye if we did anything less. I Proudly served as a Corpsmen with D 1/5 in Vietnam and I can't tell you how much I loved and cared for my Marines. They were the greatest, bravest Men I have ever met. One of the greatest days of my life is the day they called my son Marine. From that day on we would have a bond that would be even stronger then just father and son. So thanks again and Semper Fi

We Devil Docs are only as good as we are because of the Men who trained us in FMF school. If we were not able to protect ourselves, we would not be able to care for our Marines. Yes...Our! I was lead corpsman at 1st HospCo, 1st Mar Div in Chu Lai and up in Da Nang. I helped other corpsmen patch up the Marines who came to us. And I thought of them as "my men", even tho' so many were only 18 and 19. They were smart, loyal, afraid, brave, happy, concerned, and, most of all: Marines. I was proud to wear the uniform, and I still am proud after these 37 years.

Because of Good Men, Marines we have the proud job of serving, we a raise by a power over other squids and set to a higher standard when we strip the navy duds off and strap on that Marine uniform of a Navy Doc.
Really, I was impressed with the Marines from the get go, I admired and respected them for every tighter and stronger link of discipline they set in me.

Fitz..........Hey Doc Fitz-your name sounds familiar also-Were you in the Field Med Class -at 13 area-April 1967?.We had a large class-I had a picture of the Doc's-but when I learned of the Deaths in Nam of Corpsman-I threw it away.Probably superstitus-don't remember the Field Med Class number
Really didn't learn much there either.Learned how to make a Latrene-that's about it.Shot the 45 cal hand gun-could'nt hit the target if my life depended on it.Much better with the M14-I remember a lot of battle dressing stuff.Sucking chest wounds-never showed how to do a trak-or chest tube.I learned how to throw a blue-dummy granade-also did manage to complete the 6 mile survival-run.Corpsman were passing out like flies-I never sweated more in my life-from that run. Some one stuck their butt out of the window-across from a bar-ham-berger joint-.I think We-all got punished for that.Oceanside was not really a happening place. They had a soft-core-porno movie house there. Also there was the Play Girl #2-bar-but when I went to Field Med school-I was too young to get in.There was also a Hamberger Joint in Ocean-side that had a pin-ball machine-that you could actually win games.I think that If all Corpsman-went to 2nd ITR-they would have learned-alot about Marine survival. We had a good DI-he looked like Clint Eastwood-Always loved Marine Cadence-certainly beat the Navy's -A Womp-Two-Tree Four-Womp Two Thee Four-Marine Cadence-sounded like a secret langwauge-the spelling thing is not working here-sorry.........I was lucky -I was sent to an Air Wing-This probably saved my life.I had many close calls at the Air Wing and on C-Batt-which May turn out to really be B-Battery..But I was truly trained as a front line Company Aid Man-but God saved my life-and or Chief White did. Those Corpsman Bags are dead give aways to the NVA.Semper FI-my Marine Corpsman Brother.:marine::thumbup:

Hospital Corpsman or HM(here's motrin).
.......................Hey Waveslide-there was this cleaning agent in the hospital where I worked called-Wavercide-It killed Hiv and everything-so naturally-because it worked it was replaced.I wonder what the analgesic was in Darvan 65?They worked pretty good but Motrin maybe stronger. When I turned jaundaced -on the Tortuga-which means slow turtle-I learned that on Breaking Bad-second season-I was given my first and only Seconol-I ever had in my life.Doc's don't give Barachurates-to Pt's with any suspcted liver-disease involvement. This could be fatal and or toxic. It was more toxic for me-so I got sicker. There was another second class-Doc in sick bay-that thought his Navy Blue Jacket Manuel-was God word itself.I was running about 104.5 temp-so this Corpsman decided to turn up the Air-conditioning-so I would get Pneumonia and Die.Nice guy-Do-No-Harm-is the Hippercritic- Oath that is known to the Public.Corpsman have a higher calling-They will risk their lives -and go way beyond-to save a life-what ever they can do.So any way since this Doc-second class-wanted to kill me-I was looking-for the KCL-myself-to take care of thi guy first. My Friend Ski knew what was up-so was this Corpsman from Chicargo-clued in.So these two Doc's had a talking with this -Blue Jacket Worshiper-and put him straight. The original-setting of the air-conditioning-was really cool enough-You have to be strong enough to survive-and protect your self-under any condition.......What's my point you ask? There once was a hypnotic called-MethaQuaalune-Qualudes-for you layman-These pills were not "Toxic"to the liver-but since Freddy Prince-took about 5 or 6 of them with alcohol-and thought he was in a dream-and shot himself in the head. They were taken off the market by the FDA-Right now in Bronx,New York you cant buy Motrin or Tyanol-trade name-They have all been recalled-why because after all the years these medications have been out-The FDA and the Farmosudical Companies-have finally looked at the mortality and toxcity-of these two analgesics. What's the next pill that works?-I don't know-Do-you?-Keep Breathing and find out.:p:thumbup:

................................................He y Waveside-How you Do'In-is that not the classiforcation-image for Bowsen's mate on your post.I may be wrong but I kind of remember those two crossed ancors. Are you not a Bowsen's mate? What's your Mos-in the Mighty Navy......No NO-I don't take any pain pills-They hurt your liver.I tried Vicodin when I got my gums-split open by a Peridontist-for quadrant gum repair-Vicodin really is quite effective for that.Pain pills suck-they dull your sensing perceptions-If taken too long you develope a chippy-from it.Why would I ever want to feel-like a stuffed frog. That's the problem with the Big H-pretty soon the people that take it to get high-have to take it just to feel straight-they gotta use it just to feel normal. That should be a Red-Light-to anyone that wants to ruin their lives-Yeah it probably feels great-but then this person that's so urphoric-is lying in a pile of his own-Feces-and thinks he's sitting on the top of the world.Sounds -good-Huh?.......Yeah your right I can ramble on-I never was on any kind of site that I could write on.This site actually shows me-that I have a little a little ability-to be able to communicate with people.I maybe boring-I try to spice things up-maybe a different view on things.I really have learned to hate Commies-and I owe this completely to the USN.I never had any experience in the navy-when I got my Navy-uniforms in boot camp;I got zippers instead of the 13 buttons-on the Blue Navy Uniforms. So I never really felt welcome in the Navy-As for the Marines: I felt right at home wit C Company-1ST Batt-28TH Marines-5TH Marine DIV.I spent 11 month's in this C Company-I didn't feel like a Marine=I was A Marine-and I was Good-at Doing things with the Marines.Everything-except repelling from a chopper at 100 foot drop.So therefore-the people I was with thought of me-as a Marine-Period-and if any of the C-Company people-remember me-will tell you the same.I forgot the Gunny of C-Company-1st Batt.28th Marines-5th Marine Division. He was Great. He left and a German-Gunny took his place-don't ask-I think this Guy-still thought he was with the Nazi's-he cetainly talked like it.Told about his experiences in Nam-with young females-Pretty Brutal.Hey Doc H-How you Do'In?-So Waveside-I have rambled some more-Take Care and Anchors Away-what ever they say in the Navy-Bye for Now------God Bless CPL Peck-and his Family-and his Friends

.................................................. .........................Hello Waveslide-Therefore your A Corpsman-Hospital food is not usually to good for anyone-The hospital I worked at-actually used a postage scale to weigh the meat portion-for employees and out patients.Four ounces of meat is all you get-How's that?-for a meal.Plus it closed at 1400.I usually had to wait for lunch untill 14:30 because there is always patients that are mounting up-and Surprise-Emergencies-that come first-before I was allowed to go to chow.I was too ignorant to understand to pack a lunch-so I always had to go to surrounding-rip-off food stores;or just settle for vending machine food.Any food is better than the food I used to get at the VA-where I worked.45 minute lunch is all the time a X-ray tech-got for lunch. When staff was down-1/2 hour is all you get for lunch.Unless your one of the chosen people there-that could get away with 1 1/2 hour lunches-which I was not.Strange Politics -at my VA-hospital-All people are equal-but some people are more preveliged-and that's not equal-but criminal.Water under the bridge for me now-but justice is discourged-and the wool is pulled over your eyes-That's VA-Politics-they could have been a little nicer to me and other good workers.Cant have everything-being paid every two weeks was nice enough for me.But Damn it was strictly survival-just like Nam.Any way Waveside, great hearing you-Be well-be safe-and God Bless.:flag::thumbup:

Hello again Wavesside-I have to throw this in-or other employees from other VA's will answer. On the books-lunch is officially-1/2 hour.8am-to-4:30pm-is the shift. Most people that have better jobs at the VA-are not tortured-as much for lunch. There are two 15 minute breaks-one in the am and the other in the afternoon. In order to get a 45 minute lunch-you must give up the afternoon break.Believe it or not-there are some people that are on break-there, that seems like the whole day-or they go-shopping on Gov time. All people are equal-but some people are more equal-and the Gov turns it's blind eye. Why?God Bless America-and all the men at sea-and all Americans in the armed services-in Harms Way.People have to find the right people to vote for-Too many private clubs-have poped up in America.Too many words-not enough actions being taken to save this country.Suppose that's the plan-for the future-and secret deals have been made-What IF?"America" has already been sold out on purpose.Think about the people you vote for-and try to find some good ones-if they even exist anymore-Wake up and smell the burning Flesh.Thank God for our Armed Services..Sorry Waveside-I was swept away-with Hope for America.Bye for now...........................................

Other than the garbage galley, my job is great! I work for a Glaucoma Doc in clinic and the OR, and when she's not in I float with cornea or retina Doc's. I have to say the patient is their number one priority. They take excellent care of people and are whole heartedly concerned for their welfare. We are treated with great respect. We have 4 prior HM's working here. Our overall medical skill/knowledge far exceeds our coworkers. My manager is an RN who's husband was a Sailor and she knows our ability and knows who to call when a patient goes down.
Semper FI!

Semper FI!...............Hello Waveside-good hearing from you.Absolutely-your experience counts.Usually Eye Surgeons are very relaxed.I found out that these doctors are so specialized-that there are Surgeons-that only do the front of the eye;and Surgeons that only do the back of the eye . Now that's a worthy medical occupation and it pays well also.Being a Corpsman really gives you a feeling of confidence.Kind of makes you feel that you could handle any kind of Medical-Complication-except Brain Surgery maybe.Corpsman Medical Training and on The Job Training makes you more Conscious and Responsible for what your doing. It must be great to have former Corpsman where you work. That's what I call a good working atmosphere.People working in Hospitals are always now trying to keep up with the computer. This really puts pressure on people. There is nothing human about computers-and now you may meet some people that don't have nothing human left in them also. It's good you work in a place where people still have respect for one another and understanding.I come from a place where the Borg Rule-where decency gets destroyed-and people trade humane kindness-for Temporary Power. That's the way of the world where I come from.I'm sure in Bussiness and Politics,it's worse-Ha Ha.Have a Beautiful Day Waveside & Semper FI

Darvon, APC's and GI Gin!!! Always needed for Sick Call. :bunny:...........................Hey Ole Doc-Couldn't reply before-but now -I could use some of that Turpin Hydrate-Gi Gin-It once got me in trouble in Camp Pen.I gave a bottle to this Sargent-and he drank the whole bottle-We were out on one of those operations-and he-the Sargent-fell down a small hill.It was noticed that he was a little intoxicated-and I got chewed out big time by either a Captain or a higher ranked Officer; I don't remember.Turns out that maybe the Marine I handed out-Turpin Hydrate-didn't have such a productive cough, after all.He just wanted to keep warm in the Boonies.I always tried to keep my Marines-Healthy and Happy-but they had to know their correct Military Conduct.I wasn't going to be hussled for meds-if these Marines didn't require them.I was always there for them-what ever they required-but I wasn't stupid. They learned and so did I.There's nothing easy about being a Doc-you have to be able to duck and roll-and be able to still save lives. That's not easy to survive.Them ,There, Doc's got my respect-Completely.There were also little analgesics-called Darvercetes-but I don't remember their dosage and they didn't have caffine in them.I was young and strong back then-and liked them Mule Burro cigarettes--as Staff Sargent Belger used to call them.Well that's about it Ole Doc-I was kind of always-giving out Turpin Hydrate-but don't get me in trouble-by drinking all of it-at one time.Have some sense and intelligence.Gotta love those Marines for having initiative though-Bye for now.

-----Hello HM1 DanH-How are you-I never received any info-back from the Navy Medicine-site.I guess- if your not active duty-Navy Medicine-is not interested.I even told them it was a Great Honor-to have been a United States Naval Corpsman. So that's that. One good thing that has developed from Combat Medicine is the Medical Amtrac Emergency Triarge-This really saves lives. The survival rate of Combat Injuries is above 80% now. That's very good.In Nam I think it was 70%-but I'm not sure.Keep on Keepin on HM1 Doc DanH-By your leave Sir-Hello DocGreek-How's Things?
Wow...

Keep up the good work. ;).....................Hello hilbillyjar-I mean no harm-Why do you need a cigerette and a shower?Actually lately I have not had any beer-while posting here-My aim is to make people feel good not bad here. The real question is -Am I making sense?-I'm trying to-Pardon me if I sound a little Far-out.It's probabely from listening to Coast To Coast -on the radio, with George Noory or Art Bell.I didn't say I believe in any of the stuff presented there.I just like to listen to the program. Most of the time lately I get bored. They need more of Art Bell to broadcast. If you don't know who I'm refering to-don't worry about it-totally unimportant-I have some kind of point in my comments somewhere-when I post.Atleast I think so-haha-I believe I say more than I should-I try to get everything in-on each posting-so there are bound to be some questions of what the hell I'm saying most of the time.I can dig what your saying. As I've said-I have a warped sense of humor-and my timing maybe a little off. There are plenty of things we can feel bad about-but this World is so Fu*ked Up-How can anyone take it seriously?I want to have fun and spread joy if that's possible. What ever Life I have left-I want to feel good about and enjoy.By the time a person really developes wisdom-it's time to move on to the next level-Might as well just let go-and try to be-Relaxed.Cant really do much about reality and life anyway-Sh*t-just happens-I just try to learn new things that keep me pleased-and keep on going-in the forward direction.Wanna make your enimies feel bad-Live Large.Just always have some funds-for the Unexpected Future if possible.:flag:

No no Allen. I didn't mean it like a bad thing. I actually like your posts. Anything I read, then feel like I have to go back and read again because I'm sure I missed something important, I enjoy.

I know I often come off sounding snide, the way I say things. Sometimes it's intentional, but usually it's not. It's just the way I say things. :)

And as far as Art Bell, I spent a bit over 11 years listening to him every morning on my two hour drive to work. It's an entertaining show. Not saying I'd buy into anything he was selling, but it is entertaining to listen to his pitch. ;)

I see there was a big March in Washington Today. This is what I was afraid of.Believe it or not-this was a protest-against President Obama-It didn't seem that way but it was.Everyone keeps speaking about more jobs. There are no-Jobs Left In America. All the jobs have been out sourced to other countries. What's wrong with these fools.New jobs with new technologies have to be created here.It seems that only the rich get positions in Government now.Look at these people that are supposed to represent us in the Congress and Senate. They are mostly for themselves -and are rich with all kinds of connections around the world.I've been tightening my belt since President Carter.Do you know -there are Tent Cities all over America-with the people of Foreclosed Homes. This has not been reported by the News. How do I know about this.I have friends that are "Truck Drivers"and they told me about this. There's a News Blackout here in this country-Why?There are supposed to be terrorist attacks in Europe. This is just a diversion-The Terrorists are coming here-That's their plan completely.New York is the Number 1 Target.Be prepared for impact. The cells are here already-I see the people that inspect things don't do a very good job.As I said I am not political-but since Nam-I can sense danger at a heightened level of awareness. When I was in high school-I was told that General Electric and other Scientific Industries were 7 years ahead in Science Production.Turns out this Country is 50 years ahead in Scientific Production. In other words this Country is a half a century ahead in Scientific Development .Protesting wont do Sh*t.Get America back on track with these new Industries-and get Americans back to work;to produce new things. Why is this stuff hidden from us also?-So no wonder people think I'm wild-but I'm actually Wilder........Just a thought on my way to the Future. Get your Helmets and Flac Jackets on-another hit is coming.I hope not and I hope I'm wrong.Saddle up -Lock and Load-and wait. This time when it happens again-Nuck them Fu*kers-ASAp-Semper Fi:flag::tank::devious:
