Wounded vets to kayak at ‘Extremity Games’

Fifteen soldiers and Marines will show off their paddling skills in kayaking later this month during an amateur extreme sport competition for individuals who have lost limbs.

Disabled Sports USA has sanctioned O&P Extremity Games, which will be July 28-30 in Orlando, Fla. The games are sponsored by College Park Industries, which manufactures prosthetic feet. The O&P refers to othropedic and prostetic.

The wounded troops, directed by Joe Mornini, will participate in a flat-water kayaking race and a play-boating demonstration at 1 p.m. July 29. They are all involved in Disabled Sports USA’s Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project, a cooperative effort between the sports organization and The Wounded Warrior Project.

“The main focus will be their participation in instruction clinics in kayaking and other sports as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration back to an active life,” said Kirk Bauer, executive director of Disabled Sports USA. He is a disabled Vietnam veteran.

However, anyone 13 and older who is “living with limb loss or limb difference” may enter to compete in BMX biking, rock climbing, skateboarding and wakeboarding at O&P Extremity Games. The entry fee per competition is $45. Winners will share a $25,000 cash purse.

Admission for spectators is free.

After the games conclude, there will be free instructional sporting clinics 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 30 in the same four events. Pre-registration is required for the clinics.
